Born as a result of the artistic and social movement that resulted in the psychedelic revolution of the mid-60s, the "progressive sound" defied the conventions of the music industry, with extended songs and ambitious song structures, with influences ranging from blues and rock to jazz and classical music. The Progressive Box is a phenomenal work that features all the genre's key artists (Yes, Genesis, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, Rick Wakeman, King Crimson, Alan Parsons, Focus) and cult figures that still fascinate millions of followers worldwide (Soft Machine, Van Der Graaf Generator, Magma, The Nice, Caravan, Gong, Hawkwind, Can, Tangerine Dream, Brainticket, Premiata Forneria Marconi, Banco Del Soccorso Mutio, Fairport Convention, Affinity, Carmen, Atomic Rooster, Third Ear Band, Brand X, Steve Hillage, Curved Air, Greenslade, etc). With a stunning cover art and remastered sound, The Progressive Box is an essential album for fans of any kind of music.

“Boy wasn’t that fun?” says Belew at the conclusion of a slow-moving Red. It’s easy to imagine how excited this audience would’ve been to have heard the track as part of a KC setlist given it had not been played live prior to 1981.The Sheltering Sky continues to offer some truly beautiful moments. There’s a sensationally lyrical solo from Fripp soaring through the Belew’s rolling storm clouds of sound.

Goose Fusing electro, punk, indie pop, and glam rock, Goose is a Belgian quartet with a muscular, danceable sound. Debuting with the electro-charged Bring It On in 2006, they embraced vintage synth-disco with 2010's Synrise and went in more of a coldwave/industrial direction with 2022's Endless. Lead vocalist Mickael Karkousse, guitarist Dave Martijn, bassist Tom Coghe, and drummer Bert Libeert formed Goose in Kortrijk in 2000. Initially an AC/DC covers band, they won the Humo's Rock Rally contest in 2002 with their own material, and after their debut single, "Audience," was chosen as the soundtrack to a European Coca-Cola advert, they signed with Skint Records. Following the release of their 2006 debut album, Bring It On, they won Best National Alternative Act at the TMF Awards; had their music featured on the likes of Dirty Sexy Money, CSI, and Chuck; and gained critical acclaim with 2010's Synrise and 2012's Control Control Control. Goose returned in 2016 with What You Need and an accompanying film of the same name by Willy Vanderperre. Nonstop, recorded live at the Pukkelpop festival, appeared in 2018. A few singles were released over the following years, appearing on 2021's Something New with remixes. Drifting away from the band's earlier dance-punk sound, the darker, more atmospheric Endless was released in 2022.

This anthology of unknown American violin sonatas – the first of a series – reveals music of astonishing craftsmanship and energy. All three composers – Rossetter Gleason Cole, Henry Holden Huss and Henry Schoenefeld, born less than ten years apart – went to Germany to study before returning to enrich American musical life at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The sheer confidence of their writing, for both violin and piano, in these sonatas, in a bold Brahmsian style, indicates how much more fine music still has to be discovered, in the output of these three men and from their ‘lost generation’ of American composers more generally.

Johansen is not the first guitarist to record this entire collection, but he might be the best to do so.
Some people, myself included, have better relationships with animal friends than they do with other human beings. Even so, friendships between men and animals have their own complications, in part because of the element of control. For example, I don't let my cats run free outside, and they pretty much eat what I expect them to eat when I expect them to eat it. I can't do that with any of my human friends! Platero y Yo (“Platero and I”) is Juan Ramón Jiménez's collection (an Andalusian elegy), published in 1914, of 138 prose poems about the relationship between a first-person poet, in a Spanish village that has seen better days, and a small silver-colored donkey named Platero.

Nothing flashy or outrageous here, just a meat-and-potatoes session produced by Al Smith that satisfyingly showcases Bell's charms. Once again, there are hearty tributes to Little Walter ("Last Night") and Muddy Waters ("She's 19 Years Old"), but there's some original stuff too, backed by a combo that boasted a daunting collective experience level: Taylor and Perkins return, along with bassist David Myers and drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith.

By condensing the sonic explorations of Meddle to actual songs and adding a lush, immaculate production to their trippiest instrumental sections, Pink Floyd inadvertently designed their commercial breakthrough with Dark Side of the Moon. The primary revelation of Dark Side of the Moon is what a little focus does for the band. Roger Waters wrote a series of songs about mundane, everyday details which aren't that impressive by themselves, but when given the sonic backdrop of Floyd's slow, atmospheric soundscapes and carefully placed sound effects, they achieve an emotional resonance. But what gives the album true power is the subtly textured music, which evolves from ponderous, neo-psychedelic art rock to jazz fusion and blues-rock before turning back to psychedelia. It's dense with detail, but leisurely paced, creating its own dark, haunting world…

Helen Merrill is in top form throughout this 1980 session, backed by pianist Torrie Zito's thoughtful arrangements. Merrill, who improvises like a member of the band, always knows the possibilities within each song she performs and finds a way to make it her own. A good part of the CD includes bossa nova tunes, highlighted by her deliberate lyrical treatment of "Wave" in which Zito is her sole accompanist. Her silken voice is wrapped in strings for the lush takes of "So Many Stars" and "Like a Lover," with Bucky Pizzarelli providing the perfect touch on guitar. "Natural Sounds" is an unjust obscurity, a touching ballad sung by Barbra Streisand in the mid-'60s on a live album, though Merrill handles it with far more finesse. There are also enjoyable renditions of standards like "Too Marvelous for Words" and "Close Enough for Love."

The Drop finds Brian Eno replicating the floating, trancy sound of Neroli, creating a shimmering collection of ambient music. Although The Drop illustrates that ambient doesn't all sound the same - it can be soothing and scary, sometimes both at once - the album doesn't particularly hold the listener's interest, as the shifting electronic soundscapes never reveal any substantial compositions. It's intriguing for a while, but by the time the 74 minutes of The Drop have finished, the album has made little lasting impression.

"As a Japanese cellist, Michiaki Ueno wishes to introduce the world to the remarkable body of music composed in his homeland. At first glance, this might seem like a conventional statement - something anyone might say. Yet, when we consider his background, the words take on a different weight. Born in Paraguay (1995) and raised in Spain during his early years, Michiaki Ueno was captivated at the age of four by a video of Yo-Yo Ma. He received his first cello as a Christmas gift when he was five - marking the beginning of his musical journey. For someone like Ueno, Japan was both his homeland and a distant, unfamiliar place. “I never really thought deeply about Japanese culture,” he reflects.

In the heart of Baroque Rome, the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is the principal Marian sanctuary of the Eternal City. For centuries it has guarded not only the relics of Jesus’s cradle and swaddling-clothes, but also the celebrated marble Nativity Scene by Arnolfo di Cambio (1291), the first of its kind in the history of art, thus earning it the title of “Bethlehem of the West”.

At the commercial height of her career in the '60s, actress/singer Julie Andrews could claim to be the primary performer associated with the longest-running musical in Broadway history, the highest-grossing Hollywood film ever made, and the biggest-selling album of all time. Each of those achievements was surpassed by others eventually, of course, but Andrews, while experiencing the ups and downs that are the lot of any popular entertainment figure, retained her status as a theater and film legend, and even enhanced her reputation as she became a senior citizen early in the 21st century. By then, her professional career stretched back more than 50 years and included stage work, recordings, radio, television, films, and children's literature. By 2005, she had added stage director to her list of accomplishments.

Uncompromisingly, the composers of Latin America pay a no-holds-barred tribute to their peoples, enhancing the melodies and rhythms that drive their lives. From romantic influences to innovating languages, each work testifies to a tradition. For Vittorio Forte, this record is also the snapshot view of a reflection which crystallises an urge to explore a unique realm, to delve into it and embark on a journey, to retrace an entire history, going back to the very origins of what inspires artistic creation.
