The Detroit Symphony Orchestra and its Music Director Jader Bignamini present Wynton Marsalis’ Blues Symphony. With a blend of influences from ragtime to habanera, the work takes listeners on a sonic journey through America’s revolutionary era, the early beginnings of jazz in New Orleans, and a big city soundscape that serves as a nod to the Great Migration. On August 30, 1972, John Lennon and Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band, backed by Elephant’s Memory, and joined by special guests, headlined two historic One to One Benefit Concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York City. These performances included an afternoon matinee and an evening performance, held to a combined audience of 40,000 people, raising more than $1.5 million (today’s equivalent of $11.5 million) to support children with with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including children from the Willowbrook State School in Staten Island, N.Y. John & Yoko became aware of Willowbrook, a state-supported institution for physically and mentally handicapped children, after seeing an investigative report from Geraldo Rivera that exposed the horrible conditions and questionable medical practices the children endured. The electrifying concert featured songs from across John and Yoko’s solo albums, songs from their just-released album, Sometime In New York City, a Beatles cut and and peace anthems like “Imagine” and “Give Peace A Chance.” It also included an appearance from Stevie Wonder. These were John Lennon’s only full-length concerts after leaving The Beatles.

American pianist Kenny Drew (1928-1993) moved to Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1964. Although he may have somewhat faded from the radar of American jazz fans, he had a fantastic career in Denmark and was beloved by European and Japanese jazz fans. In the late 1970s and 1980s, Drew's popularity in Japan grew to incredible heights when he began recording for Japanese labels such as Baystate and Alpha under a partnership with Japanese producer Makoto Kimata.
To commemmorate the 20th anniversary of Drew's passing, a very special series was launched in Japan in 2013…

Splash was a jazz rock group from Söderhamn which was active from 1969 until 1979, whose roots began in the early 60's where several band members met as a part of a pop group Why. By the year 1973 the group has released its first album (similar to brass rock of the likes of Chicago) and stabilized the line-up which lasted up to the end of 70's where Splash evolved their sound over longer and more instrumental compositions which bore more similarities with fusion influenced by folk music.

Govinda start their activities in 1994, when original members of Keshava (Satya Mana, Pandit Ananda and Yasodanandana), that had some of their new age tracks released on Klaus Schulze label Innovative Сommunication” decided to change. Everything started when the three Keshava members met DJ Om, who was quite well known in the Los Angeles area, Balearic Islands and Barcelona, so they decided to start a new project, Govinda, along with the support of Indian and Sri Lankan singers, plus the singer/dancer "Chandra". The new project gets immediate interest, and Govinda release their first album "Selling India by the pound" and their first 12" single "Trascendental Ecstasy" which also includes a long and uptempo version of "Awaken"…

After cofounding the pop-funk group Was (Not Was) with David Weiss (a.k.a. David Was) at the beginning of the '80s, Don Fagenson (a.k.a. Don Was) embarked on a rich and eclectic career as a producer—working with the likes of Brian Wilson, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Wayne Shorter. Even though his role as president and artistic director of the legendary jazz label Blue Note has kept him busy for nearly fifteen years, Don Was has never completely set aside his life as a musician, often picking up the bass again—whether as part of the trio Wolf Bros. or alongside Bob Dylan. It is this more personal side that Don Was has chosen to highlight with both mastery and humility, by releasing Groove in the Face of Adversity, his very first record under his own name.
