Between 1974 and 1982, Frenchman Richard Pinhas recorded at least twelve LPs either under the Heldon name or his own, alternating between guitars and keyboards himself and accompanied by a variety of associates on guitars, drums and analog synthesizers. This double CD reissue includes Heldon's very first release, Electronique Guerrilla, and their third, It's Always Rock 'n' Roll (itself a double LP originally). These releases are sometimes referred to as Heldon I and Heldon III (Heldon II, otherwise known as Allez Teia, was recorded earlier in 1975). In spite of the rather aggressive album titles, these early recordings are mellow to the point of ambient, and inscrutably (or perversely), there's very little music in the entire program which would be considered rock & roll by any stretch of the imagination. (Very unobtrusive drums appear only on several of the later tracks on the Rock 'n' Roll reissue)…

Luigi Zenobi, a virtuoso cornetist known as Luigi del cornetto, was born in Ancona in the mid-sixteenth century. He later moved to Vienna, where he entered the service of the Emperor Maximilian II. His reputation grew and he subsequently worked for the Este family in Ferrara, where he was the most respected and best-paid musician at court up to that time, so sought-after were his talents. Luigi was also a painter, poet, miniaturist and music scholar. An eyewitness recalled the delicacy of his playing: softer than the harpsichord when its lid is closed. Giovanni Sansoni, a composer and cornetist probably originally from Venice, was born around 1593. He was engaged by Archduke Ferdinand of Austria in Graz in 1613 and followed him to Vienna when he became Emperor in 1619.

Nikolay Myaskovsky was one of the most prolific and influential composers in 20th-Century Russian musical life. These two works come from the beginning and end of his distinguished career: the warmly expressive First Cello Sonata recalling the style of Rachmaninov, and the equally romantic Second Cello Sonata revealing the subtle influence of folk music typical of Myaskovsky's later years. Alexander Glazunov both absorbed and continued the great Romantic lineage with his poignant Chant du Ménestrel and the Iberian evocations for the Sérénade espagnole from Two Pieces.

In Gustav Mahler's first four symphonies many of the themes originate in his own settings of folk poems from the collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy's Magic Horn). A case in point, Symphony No. 4 is built around a single song, Das himmlische Leben (The Heavenly Life) which Mahler had composed some eight years earlier, in 1892. The song presents a child's vision of Heaven and is hinted at throughout the first three movements. In the fourth, marked ‘Sehr behaglich’ (Very comfortably), the song is heard in full from a solo soprano instructed by Mahler to sing: ‘with serene, childlike expression; completely without parody!’

Includes Kyohei Tsutumi's debut work as a composer, "Yellow Lemon"! This is the soundtrack of the heyday of Little Patti, Australia's No.1 idol in the 1960s, who was also popular in Japan at the time! This is the best album of Little Patti, a female singer who was popular as the No.1 idol in Australia in the 1960s before Olivia Newton-John, the red-hot star of "I Touch Myself" (1991: No.4 in US, No.10 in UK) and the cousin of Chrissy Amphlett. Like France Gal and Marjorie Noel, she was also familiar in Japan through the release of Japanese singing discs (including "Yellow Lemon," her debut as a composer for Kyouhei Tsutsumi) in real time, and her three singles released in Japan, including rare Japanese recordings, are the first to be packaged with 20 songs from her heyday as a fan. The long-awaited independent compilation disc is finally here! Commentary: Toru Ueshiba

By the time Neil Young played The Cow Palace in San Francisco on the evening of 21st November, 1986 as part of his Live in a Rusted Garage with Crazy Horse tour, he had already released 16 solo albums, three more with Buffalo Springfield and another three with Crosby, Stills & Nash or members thereof. And while across this staggering body of work, amassed by the time this troubadour of troubadours had reached only his 40th year, there were highs and lows, the overall quality and influence of his work by this juncture in his career was unsurpassed in the world of contemporary music. This spectacular show was caught in all its magnificence by KLOS FM, and broadcast across the airwaves for all to witness. At well over two hours long, and boasting impeccable sound quality, Young draws from his full catalogue of work for this momentous concert. In a boisterous yet jovial mood, and displaying so much of his unique guitar work, plus forays with harmonica, vocoder and even a telephone, this performance illustrates perfectly - if anyone is still in doubt - what all the fuss is about .

Alpine folklore, Alpine jazz, yodeling funk, or Ukrainian folklore? What exactly are Tamara Lukasheva and Matthias Schriefl serving up on this album? And are they completely serious about it all? Some of it sounds like it’s being played and sung with a wink. Anyone who knows Matthias Schriefl, who was born in Allgäu and has been living in the Rhineland for quite some time now, is also familiar with his sometimes offbeat humor. But he can get away with it. Because he is a jack of all trades, plays the trumpet and flugelhorn divinely, and also cuts a fine figure on the alpenhorn, euphonium, tuba, and accordion. Oh yes, he also sings.

Anyone who thinks that there is no longer anything to say on the subject of Sviatoslav Richter’s discography is wrong. For sixty years these recordings, which were made by Deutsche Grammophon at the Tours and Lucerne Festivals in 1965, have slumbered in the Yellow Label’s archives. Carefully restored by Emil Berliner Studios, they are being released now for the very first time. Like many other artists, Richter felt that he could play more freely and give better performances in the concert hall rather than in the studio.

The Free Slave is a live album by drummer Roy Brooks recorded in 1970 and released on the Muse label in 1972. It was the third album released on the label. The Free Slave, according to Jim Dulzo in JazzTimes in 2003, "catches a live 1970 set with a band of stellar hard boppers that includes a very young Woody Shaw, plus George Coleman, Hugh Lawson and Cecil McBee. McBee and Brooks lay down a funky, intelligent groove and the band burns brightly through four extended tunes."
