Remixed and remastered, the tapes capture the original Rhino Bucket line-up fresh off tour and at the top of their game!

Asterix was a direct predecessor of Lucifer's Friend; released one (eponymous) album in 1970. Technically, this was the first Lucifer's Friend album, only under a different name. The heavy guitar riffs, solid rhythm section, occasional keyboards - all sounds like a high octane version of the debut of Uriah Heep with a touch of Deep Purple.

All at once bluesy and nostalgic, gritty and somewhat sentimental, Billy Squier's first release of new material in years is a pleasant surprise. Consisting of self-penned songs (except a modified cover of Joni Mitchell's "River") performed by himself on nothing but an acoustic guitar, Happy Blue is remarkable in that it doesn't smack at all of the trite "I'm nearly 50 and a reformed, enlightened individual" message that seems to hammer many aging rock musicians' comeback efforts after long periods of hiatus.

All of a sudden, George Benson became a pop superstar with this album, thanks to its least representative track. Most of Breezin' is a softer-focused variation of Benson's R&B/jazz-flavored CTI work, his guitar as assured and fluid as ever with Claus Ogerman providing the suave orchestral backdrops and his crack then-working band (including Ronnie Foster on keyboards and sparkplug Phil Upchurch on rhythm guitar) pumping up the funk element. Yet it is the sole vocal track (his first in many years), Leon Russell's "This Masquerade" – where George unveiled his new trademark, scatting along with a single-string guitar solo – that reached number ten on the pop singles chart and drove the album all the way to number one on the pop (!) LP chart. The attractive title track also became a minor hit single, although Gabor Szabo's 1971 recording with composer Bobby Womack is even more fetching. In the greater scheme of Benson's career, Breezin' is really not so much a breakthrough as it is a transition album; the guitar is still the core of his identity.

George Benson certainly is a good soul vocalist, fervently turning every phrase as if he meant every lovelorn syllable. The bright spots on 20/20 are the tense high-tech title track and an elegant Basie-like treatment of "Beyond the Sea," with several jazz luminaries in the all-star band and Frank Foster and Ralph Burns handling the chart. There is only one instrumental, "Stand Up."

The Isley Brothers' 3 + 3 lineup only lasted about ten years, which isn't that long when you consider that the group was formed in 1954 (19 years before the 3 + 3 lineup was unveiled) and was still touring in the late '90s. By 1980, you were hearing more and more complaints about how formulaic the 3 + 3 lineup had become, but when Showdown came out in 1978, the lineup hadn't lost any of its freshness. Showdown, in fact, is generally excellent. The Isleys bring a great deal of passion to funk/rock scorchers like "Rockin' With Fire," "Love Fever," and the number one hit "Take Me to the Next Phase," and they are equally appealing on the smooth, caressing slow jam "Groove With You" (another major hit). Meanwhile, the slow-burning "Ain't Givin' Up No Love" is one of the most bluesy things that the 3 + 3 sextet recorded.

Jerry Garcia and David Grisman enjoyed getting together in Grisman's studio to record informally for their friends, with the mandolinist wisely choosing to share their best efforts with the public by releasing a series of CDs following Garcia's death. With various members of Grisman's quintet and a couple of other musicians as well, the two old friends explore a wide range of material, including a bluegrass treatment of James Brown's "I'll Go Crazy," an instrumental of a popular old sea shanty renamed "Handsome Cabin Boy Waltz," and country legend Jimmie Rodgers' "Blue Yodel No. 9," along with fresh interpretations of works by Bob Dylan, Merle Travis, and Mel Tillis.
