Soprano Anna Netrebko and tenor Rolando Villazón are paired here in "opera's greatest love duets," music that allows their ample and expressive voices to soar. […]One intriguing element of the album is having each singer join in a duet from the repertoire that's the other singer's specialty, so there is a selection from Tchaikovsky's Iolanta in Russian, and from Torroba's 1932 zarzuela Luisa Fernanda in Spanish. Netrebko and Villazón are well matched in their vocal weight and in the depth of their investment in their roles, and the equality of their partnership makes the album especially satisfying…

LONDON, Dec. 18— The Soviet-born cellist Mstislav Rostropovich played in a benefit concert for Armenian earthquake victims Saturday night, after postponing a visit to India in order to participate in the event.
''It was very important for me to take part in this concert,'' the 61-year-old musician said before a last-minute rehearsal with the flutist James Galway, the conductor Andre Previn and other musicians who rearranged their schedules and donated time to perform….

Ivan the Terrible the second joint project of Sergei Eisenstein and Sergei Prokofiev is, much like Alexander Newski, a historical epic, portraying the rise and fall of the autocratic ruler Ivan IV in the 16th century. Sergei Prokofievs musical portrayal is unique in film history, for the score conceives both parts of the film on an epic scale. Prokofievs rich melodic invention thrives on the expressive sound palette of his native Russia, mostly as they echo the spiritual works of the Russian-orthodox liturgy.

The best known of all Czech composers and one whose enduring popularity earns him a place in the top rank of classical composers. The son of a butcher, he started out as an orchestral viola player. After Brahms recommended his music for publication he turned full-time to composing in a wide range of forms but most successfully for the orchestra and for chamber music. Of his nine symphonies the most famous, From the New World was written during his time as Director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York. His American Quartet also dates from this time.

In terms of vocal power, lyrical beauty and idiomatic authenticity, the casting for this 1992 live recording of the Kirov production of Pique Dame ("The Queen of Spades") could hardly be bettered. Gegam Grigorian (Herman) hits his fearsome, anguished high notes with the accuracy of a laser and Maria Gulegina (Liza) has a voice the size of the QEII but uses it with great subtlety–her opening duet with Pauline floats like gossamer, and her declarations of love for Herman at the end of Act 1 are spine-tingling. Kirov superstars Sergei Leiferkus (Tomsky) and rich-toned Olga Borodina (Pauline) also sound divine.

Two large symphonic tone poems by the Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninov can be experienced on this release: the four-movement symphonic poem 'The Bells' ('Kolokola') op 35, based on a poem by Edgar Allan Poe, for solo voices, choir and orchestra, composed in 1913, and the three 'Symphonic Dances' op 45 from 1940 the last completed work by the composer, who died in 1943. These outstanding performances of significant compositions of the early 20th-century symphonic repertoire are conducted by Mariss Jansons.

Valery Gergiev directs the Kirov Opera and Ballet in this dramatic staging of Tchaikovsky’s historical opera, based on Pushkin’s verse tale of the legendary Cossack chieftain. Tchaikovsky’s dark musical setting intertwines the political drama of Mazeppa’s ill-fated betrayal of the Tsar with the personal tragedy of his love for Maria, the young daughter of his hapless opponent, Kocubej.

For the first time in nearly 100 years, Borodin’s defining Russian epic, famous for its Polovtsian Dances, comes to the MET.
The result is attractive and gripping because the production knows what it wants to see (personal psychodrama than Kismet-style pseudo-orientalism)…Both Ildar Abdrazakov…and Oksana Dyka inhabit these roles with vocal agility and, in their acting, a refreshing lack of the old-fashioned hamminess that used to pass for charisma in 19th-century Russian opera. Pagan/Folk Metal | Label : Napalm Records

Khram is the Russian word for temple – and is also the title of the eighth Arkona album. A Khram is a temple shrouded in natural mysticism slumbering behind nocturnal treetops, yet open to everyone. The sincerity and depth that binds all five band members together resonates in the sumptuously dark cover artwork and leading lady Masha`s lyrics that are written in her own blood (which is also part of the artwork). Arkona may have used sound samples in their early days, but nowadays cellos, brass parts, wind instruments and throat singing are recorded live meticulously and flow naturally into harsh metal on headstrong tracks like ‘Shtorm‘. King-sized songs effortlessly shift from blackened pagan metal masterpieces to epic tracks with crystal-clear melodies and piano infusions. Arkona’s Khram is an exuberant and demanding affair that defies genre boundaries with untamable spirit!

For the later part of her career, Italian mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli has apparently settled on a campaign of major conceptual releases covering all-but-unknown repertory, and St. Petersburg fits right in. It's a collection of arias from operas written in the second half of the 18th century for the Russian imperial court, which had imported the best Italian and German composers money could buy. The names of all but Mozart's contemporary Domenico Cimarosa are unknown today. Most of the arias are in Italian, but a couple are in Russian, and to untutored ears Bartoli brings her trademark passion to them. This is the kind of release where one can quibble with any number of details. Bartoli sounds thick in some places, strained in others. The material is a bit uneven, with especially the last two pieces creating a bit of a letdown, although much of it does indeed live up to major-forgotten-works billing. The booklet brings up the Catherine the Great horse legend for no very good reason. Yet, as so often with Bartoli, the whole adds up to so much more than the sum of the objections. She is fearless in many ways here, not just in convincingly bringing home repertory her listeners will never have heard, but in blowing past classifications of vocal range: Bartoli may conventionally be seen as a mezzo, but the material here ranges from full-blown opera seria soprano almost down to contralto in a few cases, where Bartoli's voice takes on a lovely burnished tone. Whatever faults you might find, this is tremendously exciting stuff, not boring for a second. (James Manheim)

In his first year as Music Director of Valencia’s Palau de les Arts, the exciting young conductor Omer Meir Wellber has scored a triumph with Tchaikovsky’s beloved opera Eugene Onegin. Film maker Mariusz Trelinski’s timeless production consists of a series of surrealist tableaux of great suggestive beauty. Omer Meir Wellber leads a superb young cast headed by Artur Rukiński as Onegin and Kristīne Opolais as Tatyana.
