Polydor wised up with this 1997 expanded version of their 1990 set, The Very Best of the Bee Gees, in that they took the collection and added nine tracks (from 12 to 21), intensifying the study of the impressive depth and breadth of the Bee Gees catalog. The collection runs chronologically from the group's late-'60s folk-pop period through their legendary disco contributions, thus tracing the arc of the Gibbs brothers' diverse career via their influence on pop culture and vice versa. The collection is then topped off by two late-'80s cuts that sit alongside the collection remarkably well and serve as a reminder that the Bee Gees were much more than the definition of disco, but continued to write some great songs regardless of production or arrangement.

It is considered a virtue to turn weaknesses into strengths. Good thing. But the Berlin pianist Clara Haberkamp is already a step further, because in a constant process of osmosis she has long since transformed strengths into further strengths. Everything that we have come to know and appreciate from her is still contained in the core, only extremely solved, cleared out, tidied up.

Electronic pop singer/songwriter Dido burst onto the international mainstream at the close of the '90s, issuing two of the U.K.'s best-selling albums of all time. Her debut, 1999's No Angel, topped charts around the globe and sold over 20 million copies. The follow-up, 2003's Life for Rent, performed just as well, bolstered by her comforting blend of electronic production and pastoral heart, which was heard on singles such as "White Flag," her highest-charting and best-selling to date. Though separated by extended stretches of silence, each subsequent release enriched her catalog and helped her become one of the most beloved English artists of the early 21st century.

Brand new from Willie Nile, with a guest appearance from Steve Earle. Vinyl release to follow. While many of us have struggled to salvage a sense of purpose from a year's worth of isolation, veteran New York rocker Willie Nile has tapped into his own lockdown experience as a source of inspiration for the set of haunting new songs that comprise his emotion-charged new release, The Day the Earth Stood Still. Although the veteran singer-songwriter borrowed its title from the beloved 1951 science-fiction movie classic, the album was actually inspired by the sight of Nile's beloved hometown temporarily turned into a desolate ghost town.

Nobody can sing a Southern gospel song any better than Charley Pride, which is why Did You Think to Pray became a staple of Sunday Christian radio stations for many years to come. Every song on the album is excellent, from the traditional "I'll Fly Away" to the clasic "Church in the Wildwood." Pride puts his heart and soul into each of these songs, which makes the record quite special.

Redbone was a Los Angeles-based group led by Native American Pat and Lolly Vegas. They hit paydirt in 1974 with the million-seller 'Come and Get Your Love.' Lead singers Pat and Lolly Vegas had previously worked under their own names, appearing in the 1965 film It's a Bikini World prior to forming Redbone. Their first success as Redbone came in 1970 with 'Maggie' on Epic. 'The Witch Queen of New Orleans' did somewhat better the next year.

Kaleidoscope's second album is the best non-compilation showcase of their legendary eclecticism and versatility. It takes in a blues-rocking cover of Willie Cobbs' "You Don't Love Me"; Doug Kershaw's Cajun "Louisiana Man"; a scary old folk song ("Greenwood Sidee," about a woman who kills her two babies); a hilarious country-ish indictment of marriage ("Baldheaded End of a Broom"); two good acid-folk originals ("Life Will Pass You By" and "I Found Out"); and two completely dissimilar ten-minute-plus originals: the Middle Eastern "Taxim," and the psychedelic workout "Beacon from Mars." Every one of these disparate styles is performed with authority and commitment, and the result still has the power to amaze.

People's Choice, despite high acclaim within Philly Soul, R&B, Funk and Disco circles are among the most underrated of the soul groups that found their home at P.I.R. Unlike many of the acts championed by Gamble & Leon Huff, People's Choice were a self-contained outfit performing on the Philly scene since the 60s. Led by Frankie Brunson, the group was formed out of R&B act The Fashions. After nine R&B hit singles including 'I Like's To Do It' and 'Do It Anyway Ya Wanna', and two hit albums, the group released 'Turn Me Loose' in 1978.

At album number 13, Yo La Tengo are an institution unto themselves, having perfected their craft of slow-burning, unassumingly insular indie rock in incremental baby steps since their formation in 1984. Almost three decades of building a language of wistfully melodic guitar rock without becoming redundant is no small feat, and Fade rises to the unique challenge by striking a middle ground between new territory and recalling YLT's finest hours. Fade is the first album for the band not recorded with producer Roger Moutenot, who had worked with the group on everything they put to tape since their 1993 breakthrough, Painful.

When "Turn the Beat Around" became a major hit in 1976, many of the people who heard that disco-soul classic on the radio bought the single and skipped Vicki Sue Robinson's debut album, Never Gonna Let You Go. But those who did hear the rest of the LP found that most of the other tracks were decent, if unremarkable. Club DJs, unlike radio DJs, didn't play "Turn the Beat Around" exclusively some of them found "We Can Do Almost Anything" useful and the exuberant, sunny title track (which is arguably the second best song on the album) enjoyed a lot of club exposure.

In 1972, several years after leaving both Fairport Convention and his own group, Matthews Southern Comfort, Iain Matthews was once again struck with a case of musical wanderlust and decided to pack in his solo career and form a new group, Plainsong. At the time, Matthews still owed an album to Vertigo Records, and rather than give them Plainsong's debut, he booked a studio for five days and cut a solo album dominated by covers of songs from American tunesmiths, with only two original songs appearing on the set.

Procol Harum's seventh studio album, Exotic Birds and Fruit, was released in April 1974. In its original LP incarnation, four songs made up side one "Nothing But the Truth," "Beyond the Pale," "As Strong as Samson," and "The Idol" all of which featured some of the band's best later work. They had retreated somewhat from the orchestral hybrid of their previous album, Grand Hotel, although "Nothing But the Truth" still boasted a string arrangement. They replaced the sweetening with extra muscle in the remaining instruments, making this one of the group's harder rocking sets.
