Neurosis built their reputation on - to put it one way - long-winded compositions, making their albums a challenging listening experience for even the most dedicated fans. And their fifth album, Through Silver in Blood, doesn't buck the trend, diving headlong into the group's entirely unique experiments in ambient, progressive death metal with the mesmerizing 12-minute title track. With the exception of two minute-long interludes, much of the remaining material follows this blueprint, with abnormally long tracks like "Aeon" and "Purify" gradually building from simple melodies into trance-inducing epics. Conversely, other songs take an unbearably long time to develop, crawling toward their climaxes so slowly (see "Strength of Fates") - or toward no climax at all (see the tortured screaming of "Enclosure in Flame") - that one's attention span is severely tested. It is therefore of little wonder that Neurosis' appeal remains so selective.

For 20 years, Long Distance Calling have been telling stories without words. Their albums are cinematic rock monoliths, conveying profound emotion even without uttering a single syllable. Epic musical studies of transcendent beauty, surging storms of sound in instrumental perfection, no distraction from words. Just sound. Pure sound. The Phantom Void is a powerful document of a band at their creative peak, this recording is both a celebration of the past and a bold step into the future.

    Genre: Post-Black Metal | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: Century Media (19802914842)

Gaerea is nothing short of a beautiful enigma rooted in musical extremity and utter passion. In under a decade, the masked collective, born in the Portuguese town of Porto, has navigated countless darkened shades of metal to arrive at their fifth album and Century Media debut, “Loss”.
“Loss” is the sound of Gaerea continuing to define and redefine itself, incorporating elements of the band’s post-black metal past with the sharpened sonics and haunting melodies. It finds Gaerea emerging from creative chrysalis and bursting into something as engaging as it is unexpected: There’s singing. There are choruses as catchy and passionate as the best rock and metal songs. Yet, through the emotionally charged din, it’s unmistakably Gaerea…

Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal, Post-Metal | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: Nordvis Produktion (NVP214CD)

The long Canadian winter has many voices, but few speak with the introspective clarity of Finnr’s Cane. Emerging from the icy expanse of Sudbury, Ontario, the duo’s self-titled fourth album is a meditation on transition: the slow dying of autumn, the silence of snowfall, and the liminal space between nature and civilisation.
Though rooted in atmospheric black metal, Finnr’s Cane forgo many of the genre’s conventions. There is no bass guitar; instead, low-end warmth and mournful resonance are carried by cello and keyboard, lending the music an organic, almost spectral quality. Rather than follow rigid structures, their songs unfold through improvisation, guided by mood and instinct…

Genre: Progressive Metal, Post-Metal, Deathcore | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: Metal Blade Records (03984-16135-2)

Kardashev were known for their sonic similarities to Death Metal, but with Alunea, they’re coming closer to progressive death metal, with leanings in the "gaze" only momentarily. Kardashev creates their own lyrical language, adding depth and meaning.
"Alunea" is a direct sequel to "The Almanac," picking up right where the song "Beyond Sun and Moon" leaves off. This album is particularly exciting because, while the earlier entries in The Kardashev Mythos explored broad, conceptual themes, the storytelling has become more detailed and focused. In "Alunea," the main character from "The Almanac" encounters a being created in Continuum from Excipio, leading to a deep philosophical exploration of responsibility and duty…

Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal, Neo-Classical, Post-Metal | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: Northern Silence Productions (NSP 322)

Adorn is more than just a musical endeavour; it is an act of devotion - to the transcendence of art once liberated from the sterile confines of modernity, to the melancholy of deserted halls, and to the fading glimmer of courtly love. By fusing romanticism with atmospheric blackened metal into compositions that veer between solemnity and splendour, the trio creates sonic worlds that shimmer with longing and luminosity.
At the helm is Coeur Loyale (vocal, guitar, bass), whose soul-shaped songs seek to revive a dreamed, not simply lost, world. He is joined by Valliant Desire (violin, piano, choral arrangements), whose melodies sound like ghosted letters from ancient hands, and Bon Valour (drums), whose rhythms echo through cathedral ruins like hooves…

Autrest began as a personal exploration of solitude and nature, with Follow the Cold Path offering a raw, immersive debut. Now, Burning Embers, Forgotten Wolves builds on that foundation, retaining the atmosphere and emotion of the first album, while embracing a warmer, more textured sound. It’s a step forward in expression, shaped by memory, loss, and quiet transformation.

Originally released in 2006, 'Ashes Against the Grain' seamlessly blends heaviness with atmosphere and precision. With their third full-length, the band continued their musical journey, always a step ahead, but without losing grip of their dark metal roots. The album combines elements of black metal, Scandinavian prog-rock, and post-rock with the unique, melancholic, contemplative style that is so typical of Agalloch.
From the driving force of “Falling Snow” to the dissolving trilogy “Our Fortress Is Burning…,” this is Agalloch at their most direct and elemental…

On their eleventh regular studio album, "Every Rock, Every Half-Truth under Reason", conceptual and experimental artists KAYO DOT commemorate the 20th anniversary of "Choirs of the Eye" by reuniting the original line-up. This bold musical statement from the ever-changing composer and mastermind Toby Driver marks both a return and a progression from the band's seminal debut by revisiting the compositional practices that defined it while pushing forward into uncharted territory. Rejecting traditional rock structures and the more predictable contours of metal, "Every Rock, Every Half-Truth under Reason" shapes a sound that feels familiar and alien at once, where custom-designed microtonal organs and guitars weave an effort to reconcile the impossible tension between past and future. Moving away from the typical emphasis on low-end frequencies, it floats instead in the upper spectrum, where the textures become more fragile, more intimate, and more abrasive and terrifying. This KAYO DOT album is also haunted by the ghost of a future to come: the spectre of AI-generated creativity.

Pelican has always been a band that's not just from Chicago, but distinctly of Chicago. Formed in 2000 by guitarists Trevor Shelley de Brauw and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec alongside brothers Bryan and Larry Herweg on bass and drums respectively, Pelican's foundation was built upon the rule-free, genre-agnostic scene synonymous with the Fireside Bowl. "The '90s in Chicago was a free-for-all. Everyone was just coming from a place of pure creativity," says Shelley de Brauw. With Schroeder-Lebec returning to the band following Dallas Thomas' departure in 2022, this reunified version of Pelican allowed the band to tap back into the spirit of their formative era and build something distinctly new with Flickering Resonance.

They released their innovative debut album, Sundowning, in 2019 and found mainstream success two years later with the U.K.-charting This Place Will Become Your Tomb. The anonymous, masked collective unveiled their third full-length effort, Take Me Back to Eden, in 2023. The album quickly became an international success, cracking the higher reaches of the charts in multiple countries. After signing with RCA, they hit number one with 2025's "Emergence," which appeared in advance of their major-label debut, Even in Arcadia.

Hin helga kvöl (The Holy Suffering) is a profound exploration of raw emotion and stark beauty, deeply inspired by Sólstafir’s cultural heritage and Iceland's breathtaking landscapes.
Sólstafir, meaning "crepuscular rays" in Icelandic, refers to sunlight piercing through dark clouds at dusk, capturing the essence of Hin helga kvöl, a beacon of hope shining through the heaviest of times. Sólstafir confronts inner demons and transcends rock and roll decadence, creating music that resonates with the universal struggle and triumph over hardship.
Recorded at Flóki Studios in the remote Skagafjörður, Iceland, the change of scenery has profoundly influenced the album's atmosphere. Hin helga kvöl features eight tracks blending Sólstafir's signature melancholic sound with elements from their past, merging black metal roots with tuneful, anthemic rock.

Five years after the release of Hearts of No Light, Swiss avant garde experimentalists Schammasch return with the follow up, The Maldoror Chants: Old Ocean - set for release via Prosthetic Records on October 25. This upcoming release will be the second in an ongoing series of works by Schammasch that draws from Les Chants de Maldoror - one of the 19th century’s most fascinating literary works which would later become part of the foundation of the surrealist movement. Sonically, the album charts the continued evolution in the sound of Schammasch; dark, gothy undertones rise often to the surface with sultry spoken word taking centre stage at various points. A pulsating, monolithic rhythm flows through the album with their atmospheric take on post-black metal providing a majestic backdrop - replete with a love for detail and the use of unusual elements like accordions, classical orchestration or industrial soundscapes…
