After cofounding the pop-funk group Was (Not Was) with David Weiss (a.k.a. David Was) at the beginning of the '80s, Don Fagenson (a.k.a. Don Was) embarked on a rich and eclectic career as a producer—working with the likes of Brian Wilson, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Wayne Shorter. Even though his role as president and artistic director of the legendary jazz label Blue Note has kept him busy for nearly fifteen years, Don Was has never completely set aside his life as a musician, often picking up the bass again—whether as part of the trio Wolf Bros. or alongside Bob Dylan. It is this more personal side that Don Was has chosen to highlight with both mastery and humility, by releasing Groove in the Face of Adversity, his very first record under his own name.

The name of this hugely underrated Canadian band was derived from A.A.Milne‘s ‘Winnie the Pooh’, whose ‘proper’ name is Edward Bear. In contrast to their later, mainstream works, the band's eclectic debut album (released on Capitol Records in 1969) without a doubt it's one of very best Canadian rock albums ever! Full-blown ‘late psych/early prog’ music based on doomy Hammond organ sounds, intense and heavy guitar parts, very solid drumming and hugely attractive vocal parts merged with memorable hooks, catchy, Beatles-like melodies and blues elements. lt’s quite similar to early Traffic, Procol Harurn and even Andwella's Dream! The band had it's biggest hit in 1972, when ‘Last Song’ charted at #1 in Canada and peaked at #3 in the Billboard’s list!

The title's a bit of a ringer here; this is actually what Telarc considers the best tracks Wells recorded for their label between 1993 and 1997 - music taken from his last four albums before his untimely death in early 1998. Wells won a fair amount of trophies with this quartet of albums, and while the material isn't anything that's going to make hardline fans want to toss out their copies of Hoodoo Man Blues, the music and production are exemplary on every track. Guest appearances proliferate on every number and the work from Sonny Landreth, John Mooney, Derek Trucks, Lucky Peterson, Corey Harris, Bob Margolin, and Carlos Santana keeps these tunes on a firmly contemporary footing.

During the first half of the 19th century, when a new successful Opera was released, publishers promptly promoted transcriptions and paraphrases to spread catchy themes to the public. Thus, famous Opera Arias were adapted into salon pieces for various solo instruments or small chamber ensembles, often featuring the Harp and Flute. At the same time, an original repertoire was also developed for these two instruments: compositions not directly related to theatrical works but nevertheless influenced by the contemporary operatic style. This type of chamber music responded to the bourgeois taste of the time, which saw the flourishing of domestic ensembles and amateur virtuosos eager to perform elegant and brilliant music – such as Mozart’s famous Concerto for Harp and Flute K299, commissioned years earlier by the Duke of Guines, Adrien-Louis de Bounières (1735-1806), flutist, and his daughter, harpist and pupil of the composer. The Harp and Flute duo, as evidenced by the pieces presented on this disc, was particularly appreciated for its timbric contrast and for its ability to evoke atmospheres that were both pastoral and brilliant.

Few women in music have had as enormous an impact and influence as Patti Smith. The first of the art-punk poets, Smith burst onto the early New York punk scene in 1975 with a series of "music poetry happenings" staged at the legendary CBGB club between 1974 and 1976. A former college dropout who moved to Greenwich Village in the late 1960s, where she developed her skills as a beat poet, Patti Smith eventually discovered that the energetic punk scene of the mid-1970s could work as the perfect vehicle for her controversial poetry and singing style. Having worked initially with a music critic and record store clerk named Lenny Kaye, Smith eventually formed her own band, with Kaye, keyboardist Richard Sohl, bassist Ivan Kral and drummer Dee Jay Daugherty. • They found a home at CBGBs, and began to play there regularly. In 1976, just as The Sex Pistols were changing the face of modern music in the U.K., and as The Ramones were about to do the same stateside, Patti Smith won the attention of Arista Records’ prexy,

A jazz pioneer, Louis Armstrong was the first important soloist to emerge in jazz, and he became the most influential musician in the music's history. As a trumpet virtuoso, his playing, beginning with the 1920s studio recordings he made with his Hot Five and Hot Seven ensembles, charted a future for jazz in highly imaginative, emotionally charged improvisation. For this, he is revered by jazz fans. But Armstrong also became an enduring figure in popular music due to his distinctively phrased baritone singing and engaging personality, which were on display in a series of vocal recordings and film roles. He weathered the bebop period of the '40s, growing ever more beloved worldwide. By the '50s, Armstrong was widely recognized, even traveling the globe for the US. .State Department and earning the nickname "Ambassador Satch." His resurgence in the '60s with hit recordings like 1965's Grammy-winning "Hello Dolly"…

Ruby Rushton’s fifth studio album Legacy! written by band leader Tenderlonious and keys player Aidan Shepherd, marks a new chapter for the hugely influential UK jazz group. In the past the band - which also includes trumpeter Nick Walters and drummer Tim Carnegie - worked with a “one take” live approach; avoiding the use of overdubs. For Legacy! the four musicians decided to combine their virtuosic abilities with Tenderlonious’ studio production skills. Each of the compositions sees layers of horn and flute lines added to the melodies on top of the original live takes. The result is impressive; the listener is left with a wider sonic spectrum than previously heard on Ruby Rushton albums.

Growing up in Venado Tuerto, a small town in central Argentina, drummer/composer Juan Chiavassa was introduced to music at an early age by his father, a fusion fanatic who switched him on to the sounds of The Yellowjackets, Mike Stern, Jack DeJohnette, Wayne Shorter and many others. After winning a scholarship to Berklee College Of Music, where he was taught by the legendary saxophonist George Garzone, Juan's talent shone through brightly enough to attract the attention of the cream of the New York scene, and his dreams came true when he was chosen for the drum chair in the Mike Stern band, alongside the very musicians whose recordings his father had played to him so many years before.
