Although Whitesnake's late-'80s era is its best known (when the group scored a steady stream of hits in the Led Zep and power ballad mold), longtime fans know that the band was around for several years previously, issuing albums that sold well in Europe but were largely ignored in the States. The 12-track compilation Best focuses entirely on Whitesnake's early era. Although these tracks aren't as renowned as "Still of the Night" and "Is This Love?," quite a few longtime Whitesnake fans prefer the group's earlier, more straightforward hard rock direction, akin at times to Deep Purple's 1973-1975 sound (which shouldn't come as a surprise, since three Purple alumni, singer David Coverdale, keyboardist Jon Lord, and drummer Ian Paice were also Whitesnake members).

Whitesnake An English hard rock institution founded by former Deep Purple vocalist David Coverdale, Whitesnake emerged in the late 1970s with a style steeped in the driving British blues-rock of bands like Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, and of course, Deep Purple. After recalibrating their sound to better adapt to the burgeoning '80s hair and pop-metal scene, they found commercial success with 1984's Slide It In and then cannonballed into the mainstream in 1987 with the release of their multi-platinum-selling eponymous seventh effort, which spawned the power ballad "Is This Love" and the massive crossover number one hit "Here I Go Again." Whitesnake weathered the onslaught of grunge and alternative rock for as long as they could but eventually ceased operations in the early '90s. A one-off studio album, Restless Heart, appeared in 1997, but the group didn't officially re-form until 2002. Since then, Coverdale and company have released a string of well-received studio albums, including 2008's Good to Be Bad and 2011's Forevermore; the former hit number seven on the U.K.

In 1973 it was announced that Deep Purple - at the time, one of the biggest rock bands in the world - had a new vocalist, a young unknown singer from the north of England called David Coverdale. David wrote and recorded three studio albums with Deep Purple, all of them classics; Burn, Stormbringer & Come Taste The Band. The fiftieth anniversary of this momentous event is now celebrated with the Special Gold Edition of The PURPLE Album. Cherry picking the best tracks from Deep Purple’s Mark 3 and Mark 4 line- ups, all newly remixed and remastered for 2023, Whitesnake’s twelfth studio album features Reb Beach on guitar and Michael Devin on bass, joined by Joel Hoekstra on his first Whitesnake album, plus drummer Tommy Aldridge reappearing on a Whitesnake studio album for the first time since 1989’s Slip Of The Tongue.

He went on to record three classic albums alongside the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers before embarking on his musical journey a few years later with his band, Whitesnake. Coverdale is celebrating the 50th anniversary of his Deep Purple debut this year with a special version of The Purple Album, Whitesnake's tribute to his three-year tenure with the legendary group. The album has been remixed and remastered.

Whitesnake are a hard rock band formed in England in 1978 by David Coverdale, after his departure from his previous band Deep Purple. Their early material has been compared by critics to the blues rock of Deep Purple, but they slowly began moving toward a more commercially accessible rock style. By the turn of the decade, the band's commercial fortunes changed and they released a string of UK top 10 albums, Ready an' Willing (1980), Come an' Get It (1981), Saints & Sinners (1982) and Slide It In (1984), the last of which was their first to chart in the US and is certified 2x platinum. The band's 1987 self-titled album was their most commercially successful worldwide, and contained two major US hits, "Here I Go Again" and "Is This Love", reaching number one and two on the Billboard Hot 100. The album went 8 times platinum in the US, and the band's success saw them nominated for the 1988 Brit Award for Best British Group. Slip of the Tongue (1989) was also a success, reaching the top 10 in the UK and the US, and received a platinum US certification. The band split up shortly after this release, but had a reunion in 1994, and released a one-off studio album, Restless Heart (1997). Whitesnake officially reformed in 2002 and have been touring together since. In 2005, Whitesnake were named the 85th greatest hard rock band of all time by VH1.

Whitesnake weathered the onslaught of grunge and alternative rock for as long as they could but eventually ceased operations in the early '90s. A one-off studio album, Restless Heart, appeared in 1997, but the group didn't officially re-form until 2002. Since then, Coverdale and company have released a string of well-received studio albums, including 2008's Good to Be Bad and 2011's Forevermore, the former-of-which hit number seven on the U.K. Albums Chart. In 2019, they celebrated their Deep Purple roots with the covers-based The Purple Album and again cracked the U.K. top ten with 2019's Flesh & Blood. They also released a trilogy of retrospective anthologies, 2020's Love Songs, 2020's The Rock Album, and 2021's The Blues Album, detailing their legacy at the nexus of commercial hard rock, pop, and heavy metal. Yorkshire native David Coverdale honed his powerful vocals in local groups in the late '60s and early '70s, so when he saw that Deep Purple was looking for a replacement for the recently departed Ian Gillian, he jumped at the chance to audition. He officially joined the band in 1973 and made his first studio appearance on the group's Gold-selling 1974 effort Burn.

Whitesnake celebrates the blues sound that helped inspire its multi-platinum career on a new collection that features remixed and remastered versions of the group’s best blues-rock songs. THE BLUES ALBUM is the third and final release in the band’s Red, White and Blues Trilogy, a series of compilations organized by musical themes that began this year with LOVE SONGS (red) and The ROCK Album (white). All the tracks on THE BLUES ALBUM have been revisited, remixed, and remastered. Whitesnake’s singer-songwriter David Coverdale says, the music reflects how blues artists like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and the three Kings (Albert, B.B. and Freddie) continue to inspire him. In the album’s liner notes, he writes: “It’s hard to find the words to show how profoundly they connected with my soul. But ‘blues’ to me is a beautiful word that describes emotional expression… feelings, be it feelings of sadness, loneliness, emptiness… but, also those that express great joy, celebration and dance, sexiness and Love!!!”
