There have been many compilations drawn from the four albums Cream originally released between 1966 and 1969. But the one most commonly available since the early '80s was the ten-track Strange Brew: The Very Best of Cream (1983), a barebones collection focusing on the group's hit singles. Note, then, that this album, despite the similar title, is a newly compiled 1995 CD/cassette containing all of the recordings on Strange Brew, plus ten more. It is thus the most comprehensive Cream anthology on the market, and includes all the group's essential tracks on a single disc with superior sound in a package containing good annotations.

RARELY HEARD REHEARSAL BROADCASTS FROM 1966 & 1967 Cream made their unofficial live debut at Manchester s Twisted Wheel club on 29th July 1966. The group s debut album, Fresh Cream, produced by Robert Stigwood, was recorded in London between August and November 66, and released in December on React ion, Starwood s short lived label. Rehearsals for the album also took place in London during three sessions in August, September and November. The follow-up Cream album, Disraeli Gears - named after a roadie mis-pronounced the transmission system on a racing bike (derailleur gears) - was a quickly assembled affair that became a massive seller particularly in the US where it was the group s breakthrough record. Recorded in New York in May of 1967 and this time produced by future Mountain bassist Felix Pappalardi, who also co-wrote two of the record s tracks, the album came out less than a year after Cream s debut, in November 1967. Rehearsals again took place in London during March and April of 67. Six of the rehearsal sessions undertaken for Fresh Cream and Disraeli Gears were broadcast live on off-shore Pirate Radio during 1966 and 1967, the first time any such occurrence had taken place. These broadcasts are now featured in edited versions on this CD, the first time these rare recordings have been released.

Rare Recordings From The Dawn Of Cream s Short But Dynamic Career A vital power trio and probably the first ever supergroup, in a career lasting little more than two years Cream sold over 15 million albums and had a number of Top 20 singles to boot. This compilation features the recordings that have come to be known as the lost BBC Sessions - sessions recorded for and broadcast by the Beeb, but not previously released - alongside a broadcast recording made in Stockholm in 1967, as the band performed at the Swedish capital s Konserthusert (Stockholm Concert Hall). Certain to prove a delight for fans of Cream, this release is the holy grail for collectors of this timeless act.

Cream teamed up with producer Felix Pappalardi for their second album, Disraeli Gears, a move that helped push the power trio toward psychedelia and also helped give the album a thematic coherence missing from the debut. This, of course, means that Cream get further away from the pure blues improvisatory troupe they were intended to be, but it does get them to be who they truly are: a massive, innovative power trio. The blues still courses throughout Disraeli Gears – the swirling kaleidoscopic "Strange Brew" is built upon a riff lifted from Albert King – but it's filtered into saturated colors, as it is on "Sunshine of Your Love," or it's slowed down and blurred out, as it is on the ominous murk of "Tales of Brave Ulysses." It's a pure psychedelic move that's spurred along by Jack Bruce's flourishing collaboration with Pete Brown.

There has been no shortage of Cream compilations over the years – as a matter of fact, they far outnumber the group's actual albums, of which there were merely four (true, they were recorded during an insanely productive two-year lifespan) – but 2005's Gold is arguably the best of the lot. Released as part of Universal's ongoing Gold series, Cream's installment spans 29 tracks over the course of two discs, with the first CD being devoted to their studio work (it weighs in at 21 tracks) and the second devoted to live recordings (it runs only eight songs, which illustrates how much they improvised in concert).

Cream were a 1960s British rock supergroup power trio consisting of bassist/singer Jack Bruce, drummer Ginger Baker, and guitarist/singer Eric Clapton. The band is widely regarded as the world's first successful supergroup. In their career, they sold more than 15 million copies of their albums worldwide. The band made a significant impact on the popular music of the time, and, along with Jimi Hendrix and other notable guitarists and bands, popularised the use of the wah-wah pedal. They provided a heavy yet technically proficient musical theme that foreshadowed and influenced the emergence of British bands such as Led Zeppelin, The Jeff Beck Group, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath in the late 1960s and the early 1970s.

Coinciding with the Cream reunion of all the three original members, I Feel Free–Ultimate Cream collects the best of Cream's work. Cream–Eric Clapton (guitar, vocals), Jack Bruce (bass, vocals) and Ginger Baker (drums)–formed in 1966 and disbanded in 1968. In a little over two years, they released four groundbreaking albums, played over 300 gigs and secured worldwide acclaim and success with their unique take on electrified blues. They produced some of the most enduring rock anthems including Sunshine of Your Love, I Feel Free, Strange Brew and Crossroads. This career-spanning collection spotlights both sides of the Cream catalogue–the wildly experimental studio outfit and the stripped-down live trio–combining newly re-mastered studio classics along with eight historic live performances.

Although Cream were only together for a little more than two years, their influence was immense, both during their late-'60s peak and in the years following their breakup. Cream were the first top group to truly exploit the power trio format, in the process laying the foundation for much blues-rock and hard rock of the 1960s and 1970s. It was with Cream, too, that guitarist Eric Clapton truly became an international superstar. Critical revisionists have tagged the band as overrated, citing the musicians' emphasis upon flash, virtuosity, and showmanship at the expense of taste and focus.
