On this, the largest set ever compiled of one of the last century's most popular composers, we may not only renew our familiarity with the Concierto de Aranjuez, or perhaps with one of the other ever-melodious guitar concertos that sustain his reputation with audiences, but also discover chamber, instrumental, choral and especially vocal works which testify to a creative imagination confident in the formation of its style but never satisfied with repetition, one which responded directly to poetic and lyric inspiration, and transformed its ideas with unfailing skill and respect for the idiom under consideration.

For more than seven decades the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) has been at the forefront of music making in the UK. The orchestra’s regular performances at its London home, Cadogan Hall, are complemented by a distinguished series at the Royal Festival Hall, a hugely popular series at the Royal Albert Hall, frequent visits to its seven principal regional residencies across the UK, together with the work of its award-winning community and education department, RPO Resound.Alongside its concert series and busy international touring schedule, the RPO embraces 21st-century opportunities, including recordings with pop stars and on film and television soundtracks, while its artistic priority remains paramount: the making of great music at the highest level for the widest possible audience. This would have been lauded by its founder and first conductor, Sir Thomas Beecham, who set up the RPO in 1946, leading a vital revival in the UK’s orchestral life after World War II. As the RPO proudly looks to its future, its versatility and high standards mark it out as one of today’s most open-minded, forward-thinking symphony orchestras.

Rachmaninov’s three symphonies reflect three very different phases in his creative development: the First (1895) is a stormy synthesis of contemporary trends in Russian symphonic music, the Second (1906-07) an epic study in Tchaikovskian opulence, and the Third (1935-36) a seemingly unstoppable stream of original ideas and impressions. The Second was the first to gain wide acceptance, and with good reason. It shares both the key and general mood of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth. Cast in E minor, its initial gloom ultimately turns to triumph, and the symphony includes enough glorious melodies to keep Hollywood happy for decades.

Classical hits from one of the worlds great orchestras: a fabulous introduction to the world of music at a super-budget price. Zadok the Priest was written in 1727 for the Coronation of King George II, but its now more familiar to millions of football fans as the anthem for the Champions League. You may never have listened to a Wagner opera, but if youve seen Apocalypse Now, youll know The Ride of the Valkyries. Composing a slow movement for a string quartet, Samuel Barber could hardly have imagined that his Adagio would tap so deeply into universal feelings of grief and reflection once it had become known as his Adagio for strings and used in countless TV programmes and film soundtracks.

Beethoven reputedly wasn't Beecham's favorite composer, but you wouldn't know it from this performance; it's exceedingly well conceived, highly energetic, and has that unique Beecham sparkle to it. The fillers also are delightful. All recorded in Ascona, Switzerland in 1957.

Royal PO's performance is outstanding in many ways. Menuhin has deep understanding of Elgar's music and its innermost yearning. Every movement displays his genuine affinity with the inspiration and characterisation of the music. Tempi are perfectly judged throughout, the famous 9th variation Nimrod, for example, is neither too fast nor too slow, achieving maximum grandeur and dramatic effect without losing forward momentum. The fast variations are bursting with energy and verve, the slow variations are played with amazing subtlely and heart warming intimacy. The additional organ in the last variation amplifies the scale of the monumental finale.
