On her fifth full-length album, How A Fantasy Will Kill Us All, songwriter Corrina Repp charts a path through the unknown. Fueled by a desire to start over and make a clean break with Portland, where she’d lived for 21 years, and where she released a string of albums on HUSH and Mark Kozelek’s Caldo Verde label, played with her band Tu Fawning, and appeared semi-regularly on the parody comedy series Portlandia, Repp headed across the country. The promise of a new relationship was waiting for her, but it wasn’t to be. Turning away from the failed relationship after three weeks, Repp made survival a full-time occupation. Stowing her possessions in a storage unit in Woodland Hills, California, and leaving with no real plan, Repp embarked on a nomadic journey that would shade her music for years to come.

Giulia Millanta is a cosmopolitan Americana artist. Her newest album “Conversation with a Ghost” is crisp and refreshing. The melodies are masterfully executed. Each instrument is selective in accentuating Giulia’s ethereal vocal. As expected from having a “Conversation with a Ghost“, the tempo and vibe of the songs are hauntingly familiar.

After covering an iconic album by Bob Dylan in its entirety, that being the famously influential Blonde On Blonde no less, how is a band best advised as far as making its next move? That was the inevitable question Old Crow Medicine Show was forced to consider following the accolades that tribute received. After all, one of the main objectives at that juncture had to be to reestablish their own identity, free of anyone else’s shadow, including the biggest of all, that of Mr. Dylan. How then to make an album that might earn equal acclaim, and reaffirm their identity and ingenuity all at the same time?

Trevor Swadling. Born 1955. Melbourne Australia. Rock/unrehearsed was completed in 1987 the 17 songs were recorded from live night sessions in Trev’s studio from 1981 through to 1987. In the mid-80s there was a vibrant Australian music scene on the northern beaches of Sydney the musicians who contributed to this album were all in bands that were playing around Sydney. At the start of each session they played Trev’s song a couple of times until they got the feel for it and then we hit the record button. The songs came out sounding live and vibrant, everyone gave it their best. This album is a credit to all the musicians who contributed to it. Jeff Mercer: Lead guitar. James Barton: Drums. Phil Saddleton: Drums. Sean Eustom: Drums. Rod Crundwell: Keyboards. Murry Cook: Bass, Keyboards. Sean Crawley: Bass. Garry Dryden: Lead guitar. Andrew Hoyle: Sax. Singer/Songwriter, Contemporary Folk, Folk-Rock | Label: True North | # CTNK 82

Bruce Cockburn is Canada's version of Richard Thompson, a brilliant folk-rock guitarist who also writes smart, acerbic lyrics about the twisted ways of modern society and modern romance. Never as vicious or as funny as Thompson, Cockburn is a more restrained, less obvious talent, but rewarding just the same. Dart to the Heart, free of political abstractions and filled with personal musings on love, is his best since 1985's World of Wonders. The first single, "Listen for the Laugh," is a boisterous hornªpowered rocker that insists good-naturedly that the surest sign of love is not sighing but laughter–and very specific sort of laughter, like "a chain saw in a velvet glove." That's a good description for Cockburn's guitar work, too, for he keeps it buried behind his deep, sleepy vocals, but if you listen closely you can hear just how his picking chews up chords and sends notes flying in all directions.

This first album feels like a meeting of the future and the past for us. It is informed by the styles of music that make up both our personal pasts a rogue classical cellist and a fiddle-jazz gun for hire as well as the styles of music we have always so adored. Although it feels nostalgic, it also feels new. It has a modern sound of its own and we find it hard to describe its genre. Whatever it ends up being defined as, we are certainly proud of it. Oliver the Crow grew out of a love of us playing together and an urge to get outside of our comfort zone this record is the first real product of that. When we listen to it, we smile. We hope others do, too.

As a 16-song, single-disc best-of, this does the job very nicely for those who want Nyro's best and most famous songs in one place. Only nine tracks into the CD you've already heard "Sweet Blindness," "Wedding Bell Blues," "And When I Die," "Blowin' Away," "Eli's Comin'," "Stoney End," and "Stoned Soul Picnic," which should be enough to convince anyone that Nyro was a major singer/songwriter…

On Shadowlands, veteran troubadour Matt Epp embarks on a journey through the geographies of darkness within him, sending back transmissions of lush, haunted Americana that embrace the dualities of this human thing love, light, and the absence of each. He traverses spiritual and physical worlds deftly, conjuring the twilight wilderness of his home with hazy, transcendental psychedelia (“North Country”), chasing muses on his road-worn Honda Shadow amidst incendiary roots rock (“Runaway”), floating through ghostly, glowing folk alongside mystical guides (“Uncharted Waters”), and raging against social and environmental injustice on the acerbic battle cry “Unnatural,” recalling Neil Young’s pointed activist anthems. Epp’s 10th album represents his first steps over the threshold in this odyssey, and its piano-led curtain closer, “In a Flash,” is a promise to continue fearlessly navigating the gathering tempests and crises of faith that define its world.
