Epic's The Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble gathers two discs' worth of the late blues guitarist's work, including many live performances and a few tracks with the Vaughan Brothers. The collection presents Vaughan's material in roughly chronological order, from the 1980 live recording "Shake for Me" to 1989's "Life by the Drop." It also touches on most of Vaughan's definitive songs and performances, including "Tightrope," "Wall of Denial," "Couldn't Stand the Weather," and "Cold Shot," and live versions of "The Sky Is Crying," "Superstition," and "Rude Mood/Hide Away." Though this album doesn't offer anything that hasn't already been released in some form or another, it does go into slightly more depth than several of the other Stevie Ray Vaughan retrospectives by presenting both his greatest studio hits and some of his best live work.

Robert Cray finally made his commercial breakthrough with the release of Strong Persuader, his fifth studio album, in late 1986. He toured extensively to support it, both in his own right and opening for stars such as Eric Clapton, Tina Turner and Huey Lewis. This superb live set, broadcast on Q102 Radio, captures him on the cusp of stardom, and includes blistering performances of almost all the album (including the hit single, Smoking Gun), as well as a guest appearance from the great Stevie Ray Vaughan. It's presented here together with background notes and images.

Legacy's second reissue of Texas Flood, the 1983 debut from Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, now expands the album to two CDs, adding a complete concert given at Ripley's Music Hall in Philadelphia on October 20, 1983, four months after the record was released. On the first disc, an early version of "Tin Pan Alley (aka Roughest Place in Town)" is added to the original album but that is the only carry-over from the 1999 expansion. That disc also had three live cuts, but those were taken from a different 1983 concert, so this 2013 30th Anniversary Edition offers something completely new: an entire radio broadcast featuring SRV and Double Trouble at the peak of their power.

This is a 3 CD box of three different shows (2 in '83 and 1 in '84). Complete King Biscuit Flower Hour material, superb sound. Disc 1: Ripley's Music Hall, Philadelphia, Pa. - October 20, 1983. Disc 2: The Spectrum, Montreal, Canada - August 17, 1984. Disc 3: Montreal, Canada - August 17, 1984. This beautifully packaged 3 cd set has the King Bisquit flower hour shows from 83 and 84, but they are more complete than the radio broadcasts. The Montreal 84 show is complete. The other show may be (as Stevie often played 2 shows per night at that venue, as short show is a definite possibility). The best thing (besides Stevie and the band's playing) is that the discs were recorded using the master tapes, NOT a tape of an FM broadcast. So, there is not FM compression and the frequency range of these discs is unparalleled. You can hear the bass and drums like you have never heard them before on a Sony release. Great stuff.

Stevie Ray Vaughan's second album, Couldn't Stand the Weather, pretty much did everything a second album should do: it confirmed that the acclaimed debut was no fluke, while matching, if not bettering, the sales of its predecessor, thereby cementing Vaughan's status as a giant of modern blues. So why does it feel like a letdown? Perhaps because it simply offers more of the same, all the while relying heavily on covers. Of the eight songs, half are covers, while two of his four originals are instrumentals – not necessarily a bad thing, but it gives the impression that Vaughan threw the album together in a rush, even if he didn't. Nevertheless, Couldn't Stand the Weather feels a bit like a holding pattern, since there's no elaboration on Double Trouble's core sound and no great strides forward, whether it's in Vaughan's songwriting or musicianship.

Originally recorded for the Canadian television program In Session in 1983, this was a historic meeting of two artists that has been proven to be a very special moment This famed live jam session by Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan has proven to be an evening that will never be forgotten. "It was evident from the first choruses," writes liner notes author/musicologist Samuel Charters, "that they were playing for each other. And that was the best audience either of them could ever have. The music never lost its intensity, its quality of something very important being handed back and forth and there was time for Stevie and Albert to see where their ideas took them."

With his astonishingly accomplished guitar playing, Stevie Ray Vaughan emerged as one of the leading modern electric blues artists of his generation helping to reignite interest in the genre from the '80s onward. Vaughan drew equally from bluesmen like Albert King, Otis Rush, and Muddy Waters and rock & roll players like Jimi Hendrix and Lonnie Mack, as well as the stray jazz guitarist like Kenny Burrell, developing a uniquely eclectic and fiery style that sounded like no other guitarist, regardless of genre.

Stevie Ray Vaughan became the biggest new star in the blues and an overnight guitar hero after the release of his 1983 debut album Texas Flood. But Vaughan played on an even bigger hit album that same year; he was the lead guitarist on the sessions for David Bowie's commercial comeback Let's Dance, and was originally slated to tour as part of Bowie's backing band. Last minute disputes led to Vaughan dropping out of Bowie's group, with Earl Slick taking his place for the Serious Moonlight Tour, which became one of the year's biggest concert draws. Space Oddity was recorded during rehearsals for the tour, shortly before Vaughan dropped out, and gives fans an opportunity to hear how these tunes from Bowie's catalog would have sounded on-stage with Vaughan lending his skills to the performances. In addition to Let's Dance selections such as "China People," "Cat People," and the title track, the set list includes a number of Bowie classics, including "Heroes," "Golden Years," "Life on Mars," "Scary Monsters," "Look Back in Anger," and many more.

SUPERB BROADCAST RECORDING FROM SRV AND DOUBLE TROUBLE ON THE NIGHT BEFORE TRAGEDY STRUCK Stevie Ray Vaughan spent his final days performing with Double Trouble as the opening act for Eric Clapton at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre, a 37,000-capacity amphitheater located in Wisconsin. Clapton was booked to play the venue on 25th & 26th August 1990, with Double Trouble, The Robert Cray Band and the Memphis Horns as support. The show on 25th August was recorded for simultaneous live broadcast and this CD features SRV s entire set from this night, somewhat eerily the penultimate show that Stevie would ever play. The band was still promoting the In Step album, released on Epic Records the year before, in June 1989. The show featured six of that album s ten tracks, which were augmented by some choice covers in Jimi Hendrix s Voodoo Chile, Stevie Wonder s Superstition and a couple of Double Trouble classics, which all at once made for a sterling warm up for Eric Clapton s set.

Live Alive is a magnificent double-length showcase for Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar playing, featuring a number of extended jams on a selection of most of the best material from Vaughan's first three albums, plus covers of "Willie the Wimp," "I'm Leaving You (Commit a Crime)," and Stevie Wonder's "Superstition." The album may not be exceptionally tight or concise, but then again, that's not the point. The renditions here sound less polished than the studio versions, with Vaughan's guitar tone bitingly down and dirty and his playing spontaneous and passionate.

By adding two members to Double Trouble – keyboardist Reese Wynans and saxophonist Joe Sublett – Stevie Ray Vaughan indicated he wanted to add soul and R&B inflections to his basic blues sound, and Soul to Soul does exactly that. It's still a modern blues album, yet it has a wider sonic palette, finding Vaughan fusing a variety of blues, rock, and R&B styles. Most of this is done through covers – notably Hank Ballard's "Look at Little Sister," the exquisitely jazzy "Gone Home," and Doyle Bramhall's impassioned soul-blues "Change It" – but Vaughan's songwriting occasionally follows suit, as well. Even if only the tortured blues wailer "Ain't Gone 'n' Give Up on Love" entered his acknowledged canon, he throws in some delightful soul-funk touches on "Say What!," the instrumental wah-wah workout that kicks off the album, and the Curtis Mayfield-inspired closer, "Life Without You," captures Vaughan at his best as a composer and performer.
