lf you're curious enough about the Five Americans to want more than a greatest hits collection, this 1966 album is a worthwhile supplement. Ten of the 12 cuts are group originals, and they lean toward the gutsier side of what this sometimes pop-oriented act could offer, with occasional influences of Beau Brummels-like folk-rock. Most of the songs are not on their CD best-of (Western Union), and this disc adds previously unreleased alternate takes of "The Train" and "Good Times."

Yasunori Imamura, whose recording of Bach’s complete lute works has been described as a ‘magnificent interpretation’ (Naxos 8.573936-37), turns his attention to the Cello Suites. Imamura has chosen to perform these iconic suites on the theorbo, the most important plucked instrument in the lute family, with a range very similar to the cello. Certain technical elements, such as the playing of arpeggios are, in fact, easier on the theorbo whose unique timbres and resonances bring a new sonic quality to these much-loved works.

Avantasia is a symphonic power metal project founded and led by Tobias Sammet, lead singer of German power metal band Edguy. Since 2001's debut, the fantasy-themed The Metal Opera, Sammet has enlisted a who's-who of European and American metal musicians and singers for his albums. He crafted the name by combining the words "avalon" and "fantasia," which he described as "a world beyond human imagination." Each album in the Avantasia catalog offers a different concept and narrative articulated by a core group and a plethora of guests. The Avantasia sound signature offers extremely melodic symphonic power metal, delivered with high production values and stunning vocals and harmonies. 2008's The Scarecrow charted in eight countries, while 2010's The Wicked Symphony did so in a dozen. 2016's Ghostlights was certified gold, while 2019's Moonglow went to number one. Sammet and Avantasia returned in October 2022 with A Paranormal Evening with the Moonflower Society.

Oscar Alemán is one of the great unknown talents in jazz history. A brilliant guitarist who sounded very close to Django Reinhardt at times, Alemán was overshadowed in Europe by Reinhardt in the 1930s and spent much of the rest of his career in his native Argentina, remaining well known only in that country. This 1998 double CD from Dave Grisman's Acoustic Disc label has highlights from Alemán's career, including the eight selections he recorded during his three European sessions of 1938-1939, plus music from 1941-1947 and 1951-1954. Although the settings varied (including a sextet with violinist Svend Asmussen, a nonet, and two unaccompanied guitar solos), Alemán's basic swing style stayed the same, retaining its enthusiasm and creativity and remaining unaffected by bop. Sticking throughout to acoustic guitar and taking an occasional good-time vocal, Alemán is heard in peak form. He deserves to be much better known. A definitive two-fer from a major talent.

Her intensive frequentation of the works of Liszt has nurtured her sense of narrative and her talent as a colourist. Beatrice Berrut knows how to turn her piano into a veritable orchestra, to mould the sound material, to create profoundly poetic atmospheres and transport us into a dreamlike world. For this musician, who grew up surrounded by nature, has kept her childlike soul and developed an imaginary universe populated by fantastical characters straight out of fairytale, though she does not hesitate to shake up its codes. Deftly handling the arts of transcription and composition, she tells us these stories in her own way, embracing sensuous delight, frissons and chaos.

Mdou Moctar’s new album is Funeral for Justice completely re-recorded and rearranged for acoustic and traditional instruments. It is an evolution of the band’s critically-adored breakout – the meditative mirror-image to the blistering original. In July of 2023, Mdou Moctar was on tour in the United States when the president of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, was deposed by a military junta who made him prisoner at the presidential residence.

A Paradise In The Hold is an album of yearning. It’s about Ivor Novello Award winning Yazz Ahmed’s dual heritage, drawing on traditional music and folklore as well as her own personal experience as a British-Bahraini woman. A sweeping epic where tradition meets innovation, she melds ancient rhythms with contemporary musicianship. The record is a tribute to the sorrowful songs of Bahrain’s pearl divers, the strength of Arab women, and the celebratory rhythms of women's traditional drumming circles, while also telling the story of Yazz’s own decade-long voyage of self-discovery.

Claudio Arrau recorded these concertos twice for Philips, the present performances in 1963, and then again in 1980 with Colin Davis and the Boston Symphony. There's very little to choose between them. Tempos are almost identical, and contrary to what one might expect, the slow movement of the Schumann concerto is actually a bit faster in the later version. Arrau's way with the music is wholly characteristic of the man: serious, even reverential (at the beginning of the Schumann), and played with drop-dead gorgeous tone. The result enhances the stature of both works, but the Grieg in particular. The climax of the finale has an epic grandeur without a hint of bombast that you simply won't find in any other performance. Dohnányi's accompaniments are also distinguished: he lets Arrau lead but isn't afraid to permit the orchestra to assert itself where necessary; and of course the playing of the Concertgebouw is top-notch. If you haven't heard Arrau in this music, it really doesn't matter which of his recordings you wind up with, but do try to get at least one of them.

Complete Discography compiles Minor Threat's entire body of recordings on a single compact disc. Hardcore, as a rule, wasn't particularly musically diverse, but Minor Threat were one of the genre's groundbreaking acts and their music has held up better than most of their contemporaries. As the de facto leaders of the Washington, D.C., hardcore scene, the band pioneered the straight-edge mentality by emphasizing impossibly fast tempos, brief songs, political lyrics, and a drug- and alcohol-free lifestyle. Besides setting the precedent for several generations of punk rockers with their music and ideals, Minor Threat were simply a better band than most hardcore groups. They had a tight, distinctive sound that wasn't as heavy as their Californian counterparts and, therefore, were often more bracing and effective. Although some of the music on Complete Discography, like much of hardcore in general, hasn't aged particularly well – with its cheap production, rigid song structures, and political concerns, it is very much a piece of the early '80s – the sound remains invigorating; the band possessed a visceral energy matched by only a handful of their peers.

This new album from the London Choral Sinfonia breathes fresh life into the works of Malcolm Arnold, celebrating his vibrant and masterful writing from symphonies to choral pieces and concertos, highlighting the often overlooked genius of one of Britain’s most versatile composers. For the album’s curator and LCS director, Michael Waldron, the journey began with childhood memories of playing Arnold’s wind and brass band pieces at school. It was during a Covid lockdown that a chance rediscovery of The Belles of St Trinian’s reignited Waldron’s admiration for Arnold’s music, leading to an exploration of his symphonies, brass works, and the captivating Organ Concerto. This discovery also unearthed a treasure trove of largely unrecorded choral works, including Laudate Dominum and The John Clare Cantata, showcasing Arnold’s remarkable ability to blend grandeur with mystery.
