Elena Firsova and Dmitri Smirnov formed an extraordinary composing couple who spent almost half a century of creative life together as wife and husband. They met and fell in love while studying at the Moscow Conservatoire, and from the start, they shared a passion for the arts and the world around them. As young composers, Smirnov and Firsova’s music was heard in “unofficial” concerts outside the USSR, away from the judgmental ears of the Union of Soviet Composers.

The Hobbit is a 1977 American animated musical television special created by Rankin/Bass and animated by Topcraft. The film is an adaptation of the 1937 book of the same name by J. R. R. Tolkien; it was first broadcast on NBC in the United States on Sunday, November 27, 1977. The teleplay won a Peabody Award; the film received a Christopher Award. The New York Times found the film "curiously eclectic", but felt that whatever its failings, it warranted attention. The Tolkien scholar Douglas A. Anderson called the adaptation "execrable"; the author Baird Searles called it an "abomination" and an attempt that had "failed miserably", regretting the quality of the animation and of the soundtrack, and the omission of key plot points.

Each Mosaic project falls into at least one of three categories. Some sets we know will be significant because of the demand for a hard-to-find jazz artist or the unique scope of a Mosaic box. Some sets we bring out because, popular or not, the music must be heard. And sometimes… we just love it. Want it. Have to have it. Which brings us to The Complete Dial Masters. As the saying goes, check all the boxes. As most jazz fans know, among the most important records to hear in your life are Charlie Parker's Dial Sessions, recorded between 1946 and 1947. They are classics with Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Howard McGee, Wardell Gray, J. J. Johnson, Duke Jordan, Teddy Edwards, Teddy Wilson, Errol Garner, Tommy Potter, Max Roach and others. But Dial was way more than Parker. It was a microcosm of the explosive changes happening at a moment in time. And we have everything. Every master, every important alternate, and many intriguing false starts, on nine CDs. The set was only previously collected in Japan 20 years ago. Now it's available worldwide at last, if you hurry.

For the first time anywhere, the Complete Commodore & Decca Eddie Condon & Bud Freeman Sessions. A substantial set - eight CDs containing 199 tracks in all. The set spans the years 1938, when Chicago-style jazz first took root in New York, through 1950. These sessions were recorded in New York City at the Brunswick Studios on 1776 Broadway; the Decca Studios on 50 West 57th Street; Liederkranz Hall at 111 E. 58th Street; Reeves Sound Studios on 304 E. 44th Street; WOR Studios on 1440 Broadway; and at the World Broadcasting System, 711 5th Avenue. It's the most extensive collection you will find showcasing this style, from two of its leading proponents – music that became known as Nicksieland Jazz after Nick's Tavern in Greenwich Village, the popular haunt that was home to this music from the time these tracks were recorded. In the interests of being as complete as humanly possible, Mosaics searched out every available LP and 78 from collector sources to augment what exists in the record label vaults, then painstakingly and lovingly transferred them using state-of-the-art 24-bit digital technology. We can confidently assure you, you've never heard them sound this good.

The Ninth Symphony, which Antonín Dvorák himself titled ‘From the New World’, was a huge success when it premiered on 16 December 1893 at Carnegie Hall in New York: ‘The newspapers say that never before has a composer enjoyed such a triumph.’ However, it was by no means uncontroversial – Dvorák had been invited to the USA and given the task of creating an American national music. He therefore studied the music of the indigenous population, the descendants of slaves and various other inhabitants, and created the symphony with all these sources in mind. Though many critics did not consider that the goal of an authentic American national music had been achieved, the work itself belongs until today to the most popular symphonies ever written.

The Best of Van Morrison was Morrison's first greatest hits album and featured songs that were compiled from 25 years of material, including "Wonderful Remark", a song which first appeared on the soundtrack to the 1983 film The King of Comedy. Released in 1990 by Polydor Records, the album was a critical and commercial success, becoming one of the best-selling records of the 1990s and helping revive Morrison's mainstream popularity. Its success encouraged him to release a second and third greatest hits volume in 1993 and 2007, respectively. The album remains Morrison's best-seller.

Frantic manages to touch upon virtually every musical style of Bryan Ferry's career. Ferry has proved to be as interested in covering other artists' material as penning original songs, and he straddles a smart mix of originals and covers here. Two brilliant Bob Dylan songs appear among the opening tracks: "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" sees a return to the eclectic, energetic experimentation of Ferry's early albums with Roxy Music as a lush modern swirl of instruments mingles with the singer's stylized vocals and throwback harmonica; "Don't Think Twice It's Alright" completes the Dylan pair, as Ferry intones with confidence and again takes up harmonica over Colin Good's rolling piano.

Many U2 albums experience a difficult birth, but their 13th studio record underwent a particularly extended labor. Gestating for years, possibly started immediately after 2009's No Line on the Horizon and ushered into existence by many midwives, Songs of Innocence appeared suddenly in September 2014, nearly nine months after "Invisible," the presumptive lead single for the record, flopped. "Invisible" is nowhere to be found on Songs of Innocence, yet its vaguely electronic thrum did indeed turn out to be a taste of where U2 were headed after those endless sessions wound up shepherded by Danger Mouse. Songs of Innocence – its title taken from William Blake, although many music nerds may first think of David Axelrod – does indeed incorporate electronic elements in a way no U2 album since Pop has, weaving samples, loops, and other flourishes within music that otherwise adheres to the self-conscious classicism that has been the band's stock in trade since Y2K. Which is another way of saying that where the U2 of the '90s looked forward, the 2014 U2 are looking back, aware of a legacy that includes decades of arena-filling anthems, the deliberate reinvention of Achtung Baby, and their initial inspiration from the great spark of punk rock.

A fast-rising figure in the dramatic repertoire, the Armenian tenor has enjoyed success at major opera houses such as Bayerische Staatsoper, Teatro di San Carlo, Bolshoi Theatre and Staatsoper Wien. In his album Bridges of Voice and Soul, Arsen lends his powerful voice to some of the greatest Italian arias; "Nessun dorma" and "E lucevan le stelle" by Puccini, Verdi's "Niun mi tema" and "Vesti la giubba" by Leoncavallo are some of the delights that comprise this operatic feast, enlivened by the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra and conductor Constantine Orbelian.

Built around piano, cello, double bass, and fretless electric bass, and featuring three guest artists, the album is an unexpected gem that continues Europe’s jazz tradition of drawing inspiration from classical, pop, world, and rock music.

Dame Sarah Connolly and Joseph Middleton present a richly rewarding programme of art songs from a variety of composers. The recital opens with Chaussons Pome de lamour et de la mer, which took almost a decade to compose and shows Wagners influence on the younger composer. Composed in 1935 on a study trip to Rome, Barbers Three Songs set poems by James Joyce and portray three love affairs. Debussys Trois Chansons de Bilitis set the erotic poems of Pierre Lous, which were all the rage in Paris at the turn of the century.

The definitive version of Funkadelic’s groundbreaking 1970 debut, remastered from original master tapes and restored to its full cosmic glory. Funkadelic’s self-titled debut was a radical collision of psychedelic rock, gospel, blues, and soul — a chaotic, genre-defying statement that redefined the possibilities of Black music. Where Motown aimed for polish and crossover appeal, Funkadelic dove headfirst into distortion, improvisation, and spiritual ambiguity, offering a sound as gritty and unpredictable as the era itself. Backed by a ferocious young band, the album rejected convention in favor of raw groove and existential noise. As part of Org Music’s Westbound Records reissue series, this edition restores the album’s full impact across multiple formats. The deluxe double LP, mastered direct from tape at 45RPM by Dave Gardner, offers the most impressive listening experience to date. Gardner and restoration specialist Catherine Vericolli archived and restored the original master tapes at 54 Sound Studios in Ferndale, Michigan, with assistance from in-house engineer Nick King. A single LP edition, cut from high-resolution tape transfers, is also available, alongside CD, cassette, and digital formats. A sonic revolution in its time and lasting influence ever since, Funkadelic remains a groundbreaking testament to music without rules and freedom without limits
