In the liner notes to these carefully packaged reissues, all four of the Incredible String Band principals– co-founder Clive Palmer, core duo Mike Heron and Robin Williamson, and Elektra records executive Joe Boyd– offer their insights in separate essays. Three of them mention the smell of patchouli. Such were the times, certainly, but the ISB are loved equally by avant-garde musicians, psychedelia enthusiasts, and those slightly dweeby young gentlemen who hang around music shops on college campuses. The reissue of their first four albums probably put to rest any notion that the ISB were a properly great band, releasing just one true classic, but they were rarely anything less than brave, inspired, and profoundly weird.

Piano is Philip Glass’ primary instrument (he also studied violin and flute); he composes at the keyboard. With its seemingly contradictory elements of lyricism and percussiveness, it is in some ways the ideal medium for Glass’ musical language. With its deep roots in tradition (spanning the Classical, Romantic and Modern eras), the instrument embodies the composer’s desire to merge new ideas with classic forms. It is perhaps via piano (and, by extension, keyboard) that performers and listeners can make the most direct and personal contact with Glass’ musical genius. Nicolas Horvath is an unusual artist with an unconventional résumé. He began his music studies at the Académie de Musique Prince Rainier III de Monaco, and at the age 16, he caught the attention of the American conductor Lawrence Foster who helped him to secure a three-year scholarship from the Princess Grace Foundation in order to further his studies. His mentors include a number of distinguished international pianists. Known for his boundary-less musical explorations, Horvath is an enthusiastic promoter of contemporary music. He has commissioned numerous works and collaborated with leading contemporary composers from around the world including Philip Glass.

My Son John (2001) is a jazz album by veteran tenor saxophonist Gordon Brisker, released on Naxos Jazz. Recorded at Avatar Studios in New York City, the album features Brisker on tenor saxophone, with contributions from trumpeter Tim Hagans, pianist Mike Nock, bassist Anthony Cox, and drummer Billy Hart. The nine-track collection includes Brisker's original compositions such as The Open Path, Impetus, and the title track My Son John, as well as a reimagined version of "You Go to My Head".

The Philadelphia Orchestra and their Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin are embarking on another project of Rachmaninoff’s works, presenting his three Symphonies and other orchestral works. When Rachmaninoff’s 1st Symphony was premiered in 1897 by a badly prepared orchestra the performance turned out to be a disaster which obviously hurt the young composer deeply, not even 24 years old. Yet, later decades proved this early work to be absolutely worth a listen when performed by a first-class orchestra and conductor.

Second Time Around (2015) is a refined cool-jazz album featuring Serbian trumpet legend Dusko Goykovich and American tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton, recorded in Munich on February 8–9, 2015. Released by Organic Music (catalog ORGM 9767), the album blends elegance with a mellow, swinging feel through tracks like A Baptist Beat, Recado Bossa Nova, Love for Sale, and You're My Everything—a poignant tribute to Goykovich’s late wife. Melody ~ Waltz for Forest (2003) is the 16th album by Japanese jazz-fusion band Dimension, released by Zain Records. Celebrating their 10th anniversary, the album features melodic, nature-inspired compositions blending smooth jazz and ballads. Key tracks include Waltz for Forest, Everlasting Melody, and If (featuring R&B group 4 P.M.). Patty Smyth, an Oscar and Grammy nominated singer and songwriter, burst onto the scene with the band Scandal in 1982 and its self-titled debut that turned out to be the best-selling EP in Columbia Records history. The album featured the hit single, “Goodbye to You,” a song Smyth co-wrote, and the hits “Love’s Got a Line on You” and “Win Some, Lose Some.” In 1984, the group’s first full-length album, The Warrior, climbed into the Top 20 on the sales chart, eventually earning RIAA-certified platinum status, with more than a million in sales. Smyth’s 1992 solo album featured her biggest hit ever, “Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough,” a song she wrote that featured a performance by Don Henley. The song reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and stayed there for six consecutive weeks, going No. 1 on the adult contemporary chart. The album and the single each earned platinum status. The album also produced the hits “No Mistakes,” “I Should be Laughing” and “Shine.”
