For his 1995 release Lost Within the Halls of Fame, celebrated singer Eric Burdon delivers more of what listeners expect from him with songs like "I Will Be With You Again," "Is There Another World," "Memories of Anna," "American Dreams," and "Going Back to Memphis." Though a good effort, many longtime fans will probably enjoy his earlier works with the Animals, the New Animals, War, or even the Eric Burdon Band a little more. Still, this album is worth adding to your Eric Burdon collection.

After the guest-star-drenched No Reason to Cry failed to make much of an impact commercially, Eric Clapton returned to using his own band for Slowhand. The difference is substantial - where No Reason to Cry struggled hard to find the right tone, Slowhand opens with the relaxed, bluesy shuffle of J.J. Cale's "Cocaine" and sustains it throughout the course of the album. Alternating between straight blues ("Mean Old Frisco"), country ("Lay Down Sally"), mainstream rock ("Cocaine," "The Core"), and pop ("Wonderful Tonight"), Slowhand doesn't sound schizophrenic because of the band's grasp of the material. In the '70s, harmonica man Billy Branch was one of the young upstarts helping to keep the Chicago blues sound alive; in the 21st century, he's matured into one of the Windy City's most venerable blues talents, and as a musician and educator, Branch has spread the word about the blues across the country and around the world. ‘No!’ exclaims Nunciata, the stubborn Corsican grandmother, when she is begged to put an end to the vendetta between her family, the Fabiani, and their enemies, the Pietra Nera clan. Set against a backdrop of tragic deaths, voracious lust for vengeance and passionate love at the height of the Napoleonic Wars, this ‘lyric drama’ composed by Saint-Saëns in 1906 was premiered at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo and dedicated to Prince Albert I, who had commissioned it. Saint-Saëns demonstrates here the full range of his style, interweaving Debussyan chords, melodic lines à la Massenet and aggressive rhythms worthy of Prokofiev. Above all, he displays a feel for the theatre eminently characteristic of French opera, and one can only imagine how successful this score would be if it found its way back onto the stage. It was not without reason that after its triumphant premiere in Monte Carlo, L’Ancêtre was staged in several cities in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Germany, as well as Algiers (February 1911) and Cairo (February 1912), before two further performances in March 1915 in the theatre where it had come into existence.
