The Black Crowes have collected the Amorica era recordings 1992-1994 into a new 3CD box set. The reissue has been overseen by band founders and brothers Chris and Rich Robinson along with acclaimed producer and friend of the Crowes, George Drakoulias.

Including sessions recorded by Art Pepper for Savoy from 1952-54 Surf Ride was originally released in 1956. Featuring three groups of players, the album collects twelve, mostly Pepper composed, cuts including “Holiday Flight” - with Pepper’s playing throughout on superior form.

Cheap Trick's sugar-high power-pop influence cannot be overstated (hi, Weezer and Fountains of Wayne and Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance). But on the band's 21st album, All Washed Up, they seem to be taking cues from '80s hair metal—which itself was often influenced by glam rock and … Cheap Trick. The title track, which features frontman Robin Zander sounding appealingly louche and sleazy as he issues lines like "Light me up and turn me on," is a snarling good time that evokes the heyday of Faster Pussycat. "Dancing With the Band" is cheesy fun that rushes at you like a spray of Aqua Net: Zander opens up by hollering "How you doing tonight?!" like he's right back at Buddokan, and big-top showman Rick Nielsen goes to 11 with his flaming-hot guitar solo. Zander's throat-shredding delivery sounds like he's getting ready for Headbangers Ball on solid "All Wrong Long Gone," and "The Best Thing" is a total power ballad. That one features Zander's daughter, Robin Sailor Zander, on backing vocals; in fact, Cheap Trick is now a family affair. Nielsen's son Daxx has taken over drummer duty after the band parted ways with longtime member Bun E. Carlos over a messy financial dispute.

"Legends Never Die" is the third album by the Italian quintet after 2005's Realm Of Fantasy and 2007's Tales Untold. Don't expect new points of view on this album as far as the music is concerned. On the contrary, all songs are more or less a tribute to the classical hard rock bands of the seventies. The album begins with a brief acoustic guitar instrumental Il Ballo Di Caterina, before diving right into hard rock, in the style of Deep Purple and Uriah Heep.

Willie Nelson Few songwriters and performers have played a vital role in post-rock & roll country music as Willie Nelson. Although he didn't become a star until the mid-'70s, he spent the 1960s writing songs that became hits for stars like Ray Price ("Night Life"), Patsy Cline ("Crazy"), Faron Young ("Hello Walls"), and Billy Walker ("Funny How Time Slips Away"), as well as releasing a series of records on Liberty and RCA that earned him a small but devoted cult following. During the early '70s, Nelson abandoned Nashville for his native Texas, setting up shop with the redneck hippies in Austin and taking control of his music on the landmark Shotgun Willie (1973) and Phases & Stages (1974). He found a kindred spirit in Waylon Jennings and, together, they spearheaded the outlaw country movement that finally made him a star by 1975.

Chet Baker An icon of West Coast cool jazz, Chet Baker rose to fame in '50s with his lyrical trumpet lines and spare, romantic singing. After being handpicked for a West Coast tour with Charlie Parker, he burst onto the scene as a member of Gerry Mulligan's pianoless quartet, whose recording of "My Funny Valentine" made him a star even beyond his cult jazz audience. Signed to Pacific Jazz, he released a series of popular albums beginning with 1954's Chet Baker Sings, which featured his definitive vocal take of "My Funny Valentine;" from then on his signature song. By the end of the decade, he had topped both the Downbeat and Metronome Magazine reader's polls, famously beating out two of the era's most renowned trumpeters Miles Davis and Clifford Brown. He was also named DownBeat top jazz vocalist in 1954.

Dire Straits is a British rock band formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler, John Illsley and Pick Withers. Dire Straits’ sound draws from various influences including jazz, folk, country, and blues rock. The band won four Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, and various other awards.

This carefully compiled, finely presented boxed set collects the output of Creedence Clearwater Revival, still one of America's most original-sounding rock bands approaching 50 years after their recordings were made. When you hear the combination of gritty blues, rockabilly and swampified boogie that CCR perfected, it's surprising to learn that the band formed in Northern California, far closer to Haight-Ashbury than Highway 61. Collected here is every studio-recorded album the band made – all within a four-year period – along with a bonus 45rpm disc that features special mixes of a couple of songs. Included are liner notes written by former Rolling Stone editor Ben Fong-Torres and period photos from Baron Wolman and Didi Zill, who documented CCR during the band's heyday. Each record comes in a glossy fold-over sleeve constructed of heavy stock, everything fitting into an attractive box.

Review by Scott Yanow Two of pianist Kenny Barron's earlier LPs (Sunset to Dawn and Golden Lotus) are reissued in full on this double CD from 1997. The 1973 date has its moments of interest, with Barron doubling on electric piano as part of a five-piece rhythm section, performing five of his originals and a song by drummer Freddie Waits. Those post-bop sides hint a bit at fusion and funk while still remaining reasonably creative. However, it is the later set (a quintet outing with John Stubblefield on tenor and soprano, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, bassist Buster Williams and drummer Ben Riley) that is of greatest interest; the group performs four Barron tunes, including "Golden Lotus," plus "Darn That Dream." Nelson's playing at that early stage showed great potential that he has since largely realized. An excellent two-fer.
