NOW Music is proud to present NOW That’s What I Call Timeless…The Songs.
Across 4 CDs, 78 of the greatest songs from the past six decades from some of the most-loved artists ever. Queen’s anthem ‘Somebody To Love’ begins, with ‘Every Breath You Take’, the fifth No. 1 from The Police, and 10cc’s classic ‘I’m Not In Love’ following. Disc 1 also includes 70s smashes ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ from Electric Light Orchestra, ‘Baker Street’ from Gerry Rafferty, ‘Heart Of Glass’ from Blondie – and ‘Wuthering Heights’ – the song that not only launched the career of Kate Bush but became the first No. 1 in the UK self-penned by a female artist. The Beach Boys, Ike & Tina Turner, Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin are all present with their 60s signature songs, alongside more contemporary classics ‘Beautiful Day’ from U2, ‘Mr. Brightside’ from The Killers, ‘The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite’ from R.E.M. and iconic female voices on ‘Brass In Pocket’ (Pretenders), ‘Back To Black’ (Amy Winehouse), and Sinead O’Connor’s incredible interpretation of Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’.

Even if the best and most popular songs on this 1965 album are the ones most likely to show up on greatest-hits compilations ("The Long Black Veil, "Orange Blossom Special," "It Ain't Me Babe"), it certainly rates as one of Cash's finer non-greatest-hits releases. If nothing else, it would have historical importance for the inclusion of three Bob Dylan covers, at a time when Dylan was just starting to get heavily covered by pop musicians (and not often covered by country ones). "It Ain't Me Babe," with duet vocals by June Carter, was the most notable of them, although hearing it these days, some may be taken aback by the mariachi horns.

These must be the least well known of Haydn’s later quartets, poorly represented over the years in recital programmes and on disc, yet they show Haydn at the height of his powers. When he first came to London in 1791 his string quartets proved popular items in his public concerts; back in Vienna preparing for his second London visit, he designed these new works especially for public performance, with attention-grabbing opening gestures and brilliant concertante writing for all four instruments. The set’s third quartet is particularly strong – the far-reaching developments of its first movement’s main theme remind one of the great Salomon symphonies, as does the picturesque Andante with variations.

Riccardo Chailly - Kapellmeister of the Gewandhaus in Bach's city of Leipzig - conducts the city's famous Gewandhausorchester in the glorious Christmas Oratorio. An outstanding vocal cast includes Martin Lattke as the evangelist, acclaimed English soprano Carolyn Sampson and the voices of the Dresdner Kammerchor. The six parts which make up the Christmas Oratorio tell the biblical story from Christ's birth to the adoration of the shepherds and the Magi, and the flight in to Egypt to escape Herod's slaughter of the infants. Having first conducted the Gewandhausorchester in 1986, Riccardo Chailly's association with Leipzig is now only one year less than Bach's.

Ronnie McNeir hits a wicked dance groove with 'Let's Make A Move' and Dee Ervin offers a superbly soulful 'You Make Me Happy' - sure to become a modern classic. We've drifted into the late 70s / early 80s disco sound with numbers found on tape that were just crying out to be heard. Joe Simon cut the unknown group Cynic on 'I Want You' at Spring early in 1982.

When Juraj Stanik asks you to write something for the sleeve of his new recording, you certainly don't say 'no'. In my case, bolstered by years of experience of his work, from the outstanding group 'Five Up High' through to his trio CDs like 'Shaken not stirred', 'Wow' and 'Inside out'. It always was and still remains a great pleasure to listen to Juraj. His playfulness with musical forms, his unexpected, funny but always controlled fantasies and that consistent, unmissable swing with his colleagues on bass and drums, all following the same groove. Jazz that I always regarded as a sort of homecoming.

American expatriate Joe Dassin was one of France's most popular singers during the late '60s and '70s, initially building his name with stylized adaptations of folk and country material from his birthplace. As his career blossomed, Dassin turned increasingly to traditional-style chansons penned by some of the genre's best writers, scoring an all-time classic with his 1975 smash "L'Eté Indien." Notorious for his perfectionism, Dassin could play the introverted romantic, but his persona also played off of American archetypes and imagery. His premature death of a heart attack in 1980 robbed French pop of one of its greatest modern-day practitioners.

A listener familiar with the pedigree of the albums of Brian Eno might assume that the Virgin/Astralwerks release More Music for Films is merely a repackaging of Music for Films, Vol. 2, a bonus album included within the LP boxed set Working Backwards. Such an assumption would be incorrect, as More Music for Films represents a new spin on a variety of soundtrack material made by Eno in the years 1976-1983, including some tracks drawn from Music for Films, Vol. 2, others from Eno Box I: Instrumentals, and at least six selections never made public before. According to Virgin, these are taken from the limited-edition promo LP of Music for Films, a two-album set predating the familiar EG release by two years and only circulated to filmmakers and journalists…
