Electronic, Ambient, Ambient Techno | Label: Equator ‎ | # ATLASCD 002 | 00:51:58

Like so much of Moby's earliest work, this isn't so much an album as a compilation via his original label, Instinct. Ambient influences in techno were all the rage in 1993 in terms of press and coverage (though jungle would swiftly eclipse both it and the progressive house genre), so it's no surprise Instinct wanted some of that action, right down to the says-it-all title. Motivations aside, Ambient is an enjoyable collection of experiments; if Aphex Twin's monumental Selected Ambient Works releases eclipse it in terms of both quality and sheer inventiveness, Moby's own efforts in the field are often quite pleasing. Those familiar with such later efforts as "God Moving Over the Face of the Waters" and "The Rain Falls and rhe Sky Shudders" can find their partial roots here, though the compositions are generally more formal and less-immediately noteworthy than what came next.

A decades-long disciple of Haruki Murakami, Brock Van Wey, better known as bvdub, has more than once melded the ideas of Murakami's magical realism and its underlying teachings on loneliness, isolation, and the human condition into the fabric of his own work.

Dub Techno, Ambient | Label: Space Of Variants

If long, meditative and hypnotic workouts are your thing, we'd heartily recommend this release from dub techno and abstract ambient specialists Space Of Variants. It comes courtesy of Gradient AKA Igor Arsenjev, a producer whose previous output on Greyscale and U-Cover explored the deeper side of the dub techno spectrum. If anything, the four expansive tracks on "Neural Waves From The Stars" is even deeper, with Arsenjev combining sparse, weighty, minimalist dub and techno rhythms with enveloping ambient chords, warm, slowly shifting melodies and electronic instrumentation that's more tactile and comforting than an extended hug from your nearest and dearest.

The KLF - Chill Out (1990)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 210 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 102 Mb | Scans ~ 62 Mb
Label: KLF Communications | # JAMS CD 5 | Time: 00:44:43
Ambient, Ambient House, Ambient Techno

One of the initial works in the ambient house canon, Chill Out is the practically beatless soundtrack to a late-night journey along the Gulf Coast, and the track titles tell much of the story: "Six Hours to Louisiana, Black Coffee Going Cold," "3AM Somewhere Out of Beaumont," "Elvis on the Radio, Steel Guitar in My Soul." Recorded live by Drummond and Cauty (with much unintended help from sample victims Elvis Presley, Fleetwood Mac, and the throat singers of Tüva), Chill Out consists largely of fragmented, heavily reverbed steel guitar, environmental sounds (birds, trains), occasional synth, and an angelic vocal chorus repeating the KLF's own "Justified and Ancient" theme. Throughout, Drummond and Cauty display an instinctive talent for wallpaper music that's truly diverting, making Chill Out one of the essential ambient albums.

Britain's The Orb – aka Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann are one of the most influential electronic acts to grace Kompakt. Okie Dokie It's The Orb On Kompakt is the duo's thirteenth album, and it proves to be a sonic collage of intensive, lovingly-conjured quiet ambience. The first half of Okie Dokie showcases right up front The Orb's love for minimal techno as still as water and schaffel/shuffle, while the second half is reserved for the classic Orb-ish ancestral domain of trance-inducing, pulsating ambience. There are wonderful guest appearances by Schneider TM and Kompakt's ambient-guru Ulf Lohmann. The Orb have been working exclusively with Kompakt since 2002 after a series of electrifying singles.
