Leonor de Lera has chosen the "Arcadia" described in Greek mythology as a transfigured place in idyllic nature as the title for her new CD. The genre of the pastorale, the Arcadian pastoral idyll, enjoyed incredible popularity during the
Renaissance and all the great poets of the time wrote poems that were in turn set to madrigals by the great composers. Leonor de Lera plays a selection of such pastorals on her violin - accompanied by lute and guitar. She does this, as was customary for Renaissance and early Baroque instrumentalists, by not playing the melodies true to the notes, but by embellishing them with so-called "diminutions". There were many schools and styles for these, which are described in treatises of the time, and the virtuoso also demonstrated his skills with his art of diminution. The violinist now applies the different styles to the various pieces she has chosen for this programme, which are by Monteverdi, Caccini, Falconieri, Trombocino, Willaert and many others. The result is a stylistically diverse, highly virtuosic CD that is also a comprehensive compendium of the art of diminution in Italy around 1600.

The newly independent artist also shared the first song from the album, “Quédate Queriéndome.” Singer, producer and DJ Tei Shi is continuously evolving, recreating herself on each new album. The prolific artist, whose real name is Valerie Teicher Barbosa, will be returning with another body of work, the eponymous album Valerie.

On a list of instruments people associate with the name Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the organ probably doesn't come very near the top. All those piano, violin, horn, flute concertos and more understandably dominate the limelight. Yet there's a small but significant body of music by Mozart for this instrument - one that played an important role in his employment at Salzburg and which he held in high esteem.

A monumental innovator, icon, and maverick, trumpeter Miles Davis helped define the course of jazz as well as popular culture in the 20th century, bridging the gap between bebop, modal music, funk, and fusion. Throughout most of his 50-year career, Davis played the trumpet in a lyrical, introspective style, often employing a stemless Harmon mute to make his sound more personal and intimate. It was a style that, along with his brooding stage persona, earned him the nickname "Prince of Darkness." However, Davis proved to be a dazzlingly protean artist, moving into fiery modal jazz in the '60s and electrified funk and fusion in the '70s, drenching his trumpet in wah-wah pedal effects along the way.

In lieu of picking up one of the trumpeter's fine Blue Note releases (Una Mas, Whistle Stop), listeners new to the work of Kenny Dorham should definitely consider this somewhat overlooked Riverside date from 1959. The set features plenty of Dorham's varied and sophisticated horn work and four of his top-drawer originals. The theme is spring, and Dorham responds with his soon to be jazz standard "Spring Is Here" and three other fine seasonal tributes: the title track, "Poetic Spring," and "Spring Cannon." This last cut is also a tribute to Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, who guests in fine style here with a bevy of fleet and highly melodic solos. Rounding out the group, baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne, French horn player David Amram, and pianist Cedar Walton add very nicely to the album's breezy yet provocative air. Essential listening for Dorham fans.

The song Hey There Grandpa is an appropriate change of pace mellow one otherwise Travellin' Tracks is all fast and fun and cool blues with a hip country tinge.

Jethro Tull and Comus had a baby, and they named it Gravy Train. That's not strictly accurate, of course, but as the band's eponymous debut opens with the fluid changes of "The New One," it's not too far of a reach, either. Richly harmonic, daringly jam-laden, and peppered with guitar roars that simply defy comparison, Gravy Train is the sound of the British underground at its most joyously liberated peak - a time when a bunch of apparent freaks could simply go into a major recording studio and let rip. Except Gravy Train's concept of "letting rip" has more in common with a symphony orchestra than the Edgar Broughton Band. Without, of course, the orchestra. But there's a moment in the midst of "Think of Life" that cannot help but put one in mind of later Deep Purple, as the flute and guitar battle for supremacy, while the blues workout "Coast Road" is as breathtaking as any of that genre's better-feted exponents…

L'exceptionnelle découverte, en 2015, de ce manuscrit émanant du centre de la France et daté approximativement de 1475 enrichit et renouvelle notre connaissance de la chanson de langue française du milieu du XVe siècle. En effet, sur les 49 chansons séculières qu'il rassemble, 12 ne figurent dans aucune autre source. Si aucune indication d'auteur ne figure dans le manuscrit, les chercheurs ont pu, par recoupements, attribuer nombre d'entre elles à des compositeurs déjà connus ; d'autres restent anonymes. Ce sont bien sûr des chansons d'amour, ballades, lais et virelais. Dominent naturellement dans cet album des compositeurs franco-flamands de la cour des ducs de Bourgogne, comme Antoine Busnois, Hayne van Ghizeghem, Gilles Binchois, ou encore l'Anglais Robert Morton. Mais on y trouve aussi des chansons d'autres compositeurs nordiques ayant oeuvré pour la cour des rois de France, comme Firminus Caron et Johannes Ockeghem, ainsi qu'un représentant de la « contenance angloise », Walter Frye. Ainsi qu’un certain Barbingant dont on ne sait rien d'autre que son « Au travail suis » fut la base d'une messe parodique d'Ockeghem. L’Ensemble Sollazzo nous aura offert de ce manuscrit richement enluminé une lecture passionnante, fraîche, variée, éclatante, osée mais convaincante. (Marc Galand)
