As France recovered from the shock of defeat to Prussian forces in 1870, the country began to boast again of its status as the centre of the world. Paris was the place to be for anyone interested in contemporary culture and the advance of modernity, a claim underlined by the city’s rising number of tourists from overseas. Yet the French were increasingly drawn abroad, either as visitors or migrants, with Spain falling among the top European destinations by 1900.

Like Chopin before him, and even more closely Scriabin, Rachmaninoff yielded to the temptation of writing his 24 Preludes, assembling this emblematic number in three stages. It began with a youthful work: the famous Prelude in C-sharp minor. From this root, music deeply anchored in Russian soil, imbued with the Slavic soul to which the composer, later exiled, would remain forever attached, there would spring, a decade later, the Opus 23 set, followed seven years on by Opus 32. These Preludes are like images in an album that Jean-Baptiste Fonlupt invites us to leaf through, sonic paintings whose authentic colours of memory he poetically restores. Far from his native land, which he left for good, Rachmaninoff would never write this way again.

In their music, Florence + The Machine explores themes such as love, death and pain and draws inspiration from the art and literature of the Renaissance.

Premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 26 January 1857, Ambroise Thomas’s Psyché tells the story of the ill-starred love between Eros and Psyche, who are manipulated by the cynical Mercury and envied by Daphne and Berenice, the heroine’s own sisters. The style of the work represents the nec plus ultra of mid-nineteenth-century French opéra-comique, notably in the Italianate influence of Rossini, which gives the singers of the two leading roles – one of which, Eros, is a breeches part for mezzo-soprano – a chance to glitter amid torrents of coloratura poured forth in impressive, passionate love duets. The librettists Jules Barbier and Michel Carré achieved an inspired blend of comedy and tragedy by contrasting a quartet of cruel and grotesque characters (Psyche’s sisters and their suitors) with the noble hero and heroine. Ambroise Thomas’s music does not merely foreshadow the future triumphs of Mignon and Hamlet: it is worthy to stand beside them at the pinnacle of his operatic legacy, as his obituarists declared. This recording confirms their judgment.

This Scottish heavy AOR quartet was put together in 1985 by brothers Ian (guitar) and David Stewart (bass) after demise of China White. With Jim Drummond (drums) and Tony Liddell (vocals), they debuted with a self-titled album in 1985. This offered a blend of Americanized, melodic AOR comparable with the work of Boston, Journey or Kansas. Produced by Kevin Elson (of Journey fame), it surpassed many expectations, but was ignored by the British public. Terry Brock (from Atlanta, USA) replaced Liddell on Native Sons, which saw the band consolidate their style and progress significantly as songwriters. It remains one of the sadly neglected albums of the pomp-rock/AOR genre. Walk In The Fire was not as immediate, with Brock’s vocals sounding hoarse and less sophisticated. He left to audition for Deep Purple in 1989, but was unsuccessful. Further albums were released with Ian Stewart on lead vocals.

Poppea, a courtesan with an insatiable thirst for power, weaves her destiny with formidable grace. Mistress of the Emperor Nero, she frees herself from all restraints, sweeping aside past loves, orchestrating the suicide of the philosopher Seneca and precipitating the fall of the Empress Octavia. Her coronation and the coveted union with Nero could be seen as nothing more than a manifesto of amorality. However, under Monteverdi's majestic inspiration and Stéphane Fuget's fervent direction, this ascension is transformed into an intoxicating ode to all-powerful desire, revealing the terrifying beauty of unrestrained ambition!

Beginning in 1968, Richie was a member of the Commodores. The Commodores became established as a popular soul group; their first several albums had a danceable, funky sound, as in such tracks as "Machine Gun" and "Brick House". Over time, Richie wrote and sang more romantic, easy-listening ballads such as "Easy", "Three Times a Lady", "Still", and the breakup ballad "Sail On". Richie launched a solo career in 1982 and his 1982 debut solo album, Lionel Richie, contained three hit singles: the U.S. number-one song "Truly", and the top five hits "You Are" and "My Love". The album hit No. 3 on the music charts and sold over four million copies. His 1983 follow-up album, Can't Slow Down, sold over twice as many copies, propelling him into the first rank of international superstars. He also co-wrote the 1985 charity single "We Are the World" with Michael Jackson, which sold over 20 million copies.

Featuring Paul "Sandy" Davis (lead vocals, 12-string guitar), Alan Cowderoy (lead guitar, vocals), Martin Kitcat (Mellotron, organ, piano, vocals), Tim Wheatley (bass, vocals) and Robert Lipson (drums), the band first came to prominence in 1968 when they supported The Who on tour. They recorded a single for Polydor Records before a support slot for King Crimson in 1969 led to them purchasing a mellotron and changing style. In 1970 their debut self-titled album appeared on the Vertigo label and the band were greeted with critical praise. This in turn led to Gracious! performing a set at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival (joining a bill that featured Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Who, Family, ELP, The Moody Blues and many more). Their set was recorded and filmed but was to remain unreleased.

During the reign of Le Roi Soleil Louis XIV, music played the fundamental role of defining and consolidating the centrality of power: music had to represent the grandeur and divine nature of the sovereign, the power and splendour of the French crown.Instead, one can start the ‘siècle des lumières’ [century of enlightenment] already with the accession to the throne of Louis XV in 1715. Of an introverted nature, little interested in political matters, dedicated to pleasures and amusements, Le Soleil Noir found himself in the hands of a kingdom that was moving in an increasingly opposite direction: the city of Paris became in the 18th century the gravitational centre of France for the presence of the nobility, intellectuals and the emerging bourgeoisie. Musicians preferred to live in Paris rather than in Versailles, where they were not paid as well as before. The sumptuousness of the Baroque thus changed into the elegance and sinuosity of the Rococo in all the arts.

The viola da gamba is not dead, despite a claim to the contrary in the Dictionary of Musicians by German composer, organist and cellist Ernst Ludwig Gerber (1746–1819). From the 16th century to the end of the 18th, the viola da gamba experienced a true apotheosis, becoming the favoured instrument for bourgeois entertainment, particularly in Germany, France, Italy and England, even if the instrument’s origins lie in the Spanish Renaissance. Because of these associations with the aristocracy, but also because of advances in musical style that demanded more from the role of the lower member of the string family, the gamba lost ground to the newer cello during the French Revolution.

The Who by Numbers functions as Pete Townshend's confessional singer/songwriter album, as he chronicles his problems with alcohol ("However Much I Booze"), women ("Dreaming From the Waist" and "They Are All in Love"), and life in general. However, his introspective musings are rendered ineffective by Roger Daltrey's bluster and the cloying, lightweight filler of "Squeeze Box." In addition, Townshend's songs tend to be underdeveloped, relying on verbosity instead of melodicism, with only the simple power of "Slip Kid," the grace of "Blue Red and Grey," and John Entwistle's heavy rocker "Success Story" making much of an impact.
