This 18-song compilation was originally assembled by RCA in 1984, and then bumped over to CD by BMG through Pair Records three years later. It shows Chet Atkins at his elegant best, his crisp, clean guitar sound applied to countrypolitan, hillbilly, bluegrass, and pop standards, everything from "Wabash Cannonball" to "The Bells of St. Mary's." The sound is crisp and holds up remarkably well despite the early vintage of the CD – as is typical of Pair's releases, there is no annotation whatsoever and no indication of the dates of origin of these track, though they're all in stereo and very clean.

Picks on the Hits is the forty-third studio album by guitarist Chet Atkins, released in 1972. It was nominated for the 1972 Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance but did not win. Chet's duet release with Jerry Reed Me & Chet was also nominated in the same category. The CD reissue by Pair Records adds eight additional tracks from Picks the Best and leaves off "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" and "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard".

It seems that Les Paul had a relaxing effect on Atkins in the studio, because this disc, which compiles their two studio efforts, is charming. The production is modest and both pickers are in sharp form. The country twang added to standards like "It's Been a Long, Long Time" is irresistible.

One of the most influential guitarists of the 20th century, as well as a legendary musician and producer within country music. Without Chet Atkins, country music may never have crossed over into the pop charts in the '50s and '60s. Although he recorded hundreds of solo records, Atkins' largest influence came as a session musician and a record producer. During the '50s and '60s, he helped create the Nashville sound, a style of country music that owed nearly as much to pop as it did to honky tonks. And as a guitarist, he was without parallel.

The Essential Chet Atkins: The Columbia Years collects 15 tracks from eight albums recorded between 1983 and 1997. While Atkins never fully gives up his country roots, much of this material leans in a definite jazz-pop direction, highlighted by memorable collaborations with Mark Knopfler on "Poor Boy Blues," "So Soft, Your Goodbye," and "I'll See You in My Dreams." Atkins also trades licks with Tommy Emmanuel on "Dixie McGuire" and "Road to Gundaghi/Waltzing Matilda," as well as longtime buddy Jerry Reed on "Sneakin' Around." The selections have been digitally remastered so every tiny musical nuance can be detected, which should no doubt satisfy guitar enthusiasts and Atkins fans.

Chet, Floyd & Boots is a studio album by American guitarist Chet Atkins, pianist Floyd Cramer and saxophone player Boots Randolph. Boots had a novelty hit with Yakety Sax which Chet covered, playing the saxophone lead on guitar, as Yakety Axe - which also became a hit. Cramer was a regular session musician at the Nashville studios, playing with a multitude of artists including Elvis Presley and Brenda Lee, helping to define the "Nashville Sound" that Atkins had also helped develop. The trio briefly toured together.

This reissue places two of Chet Atkins' RCA albums 1969's Lover's Guitar and 1970's Yestergroovin' on one CD. Yestergroovin', presented first on the disc, is an interesting group of jazz standards, original pieces and reworked folk tunes among other songs. Despite the differences in songs and arrangements, the whole album has an easygoing feel that makes it arguably one of the very best albums Chet made in his long career. Lover's Guitar, on the other hand, features Chet playing some pop tunes of the day as well as some more classically oriented pieces including two Tarrega compositions; most of the album has accompaniment from a second guitar and strings but a few tracks feature Chet solo.

Super Hits is a bargain priced collection of some of guitarist Chet Atkins 'hits.' Atkins has been well-recorded over the span of his great career in a variety of settings and this is a fairly representative set, but a bit too short at just under 25 minutes. Whether covering pop tunes in an easy listening style or some good 'ol fashioned finger-picking, Atkins technique and tone are impeccable. This recording is a fine introduction to new fans (despite no liner notes); however, this is only a microcosm of his expansive talents as a guitar legend.

After decades of recording for RCA Victor, Atkins switched labels; this 1985 effort is a summit meeting of sorts with young guitar hotshots like Larry Carlton, George Benson, Mark Knopfler, Steve Lukather, and Earl Klugh, plus session A-teamers like Boots Randolph, Larrie Londin, David Hungate, Mark O'Connor and others. Atkins' tone is, as usual, faultless, and his playing superb. If the "meetings" don't always come off, it's usually due to the overzealousness of the other guitar players (Lukather's over-the-top style screams '80s big hair, for instance), not Chet, whose playing always exercises the utmost in restraint in every situation. All in all, a good modern-day Chet Atkins album, but not the place to start a collection.
