About Dario Castello and Giovanni Battista Fontana, two Italian composers from the turn of the 17th century, musical scholarship hasn’t much to tell us. We know as little about Castello, who was leading an ensemble at St. Mark’s around 1629, as we do about the exact birth and death dates of Fontana, who came from Brescia and probably perished during the 1630 outbreak of plague in Padua. Yet there are a number of surviving works by both men that reveal them to have been remarkable composers for the violin. Two books by Castello of sonate concertate in one to four parts, in stil moderno with continuo, were printed during the composer’s lifetime. In his new recording violinist John Holloway has selected a number of sonatas from this collection to couple with similar works by Fontana, some originally for violin as well as some conceived for other string or wind instruments.

Blending composition and free improvisation on their eponymous release, Triio—a sextet led by Toronto-based double bassist/composer Alex Fournier—offer a distinctive sound, whimsical track titles, and a surprise around every corner.
"ESD" is a vibrant track that opens with a trippy piano line which uses the darker tones of the lower octaves to moody effect. When the rest of the sextet join in, they weave into a complex mesh of sound. There's a nice sense of momentum through the chaos—just when you get used to the groove, it turns into something new.

Dave Holland's debut as a leader, Conference of the Birds, doesn't seem to get its proper due outside of avant-garde circles; perhaps, when discussing the greats, Holland's name simply doesn't spring to mind as immediately. Whatever the case, Conference of the Birds is one of the all-time avant-garde jazz classics, incorporating a wide spectrum of '60s innovations. Part of the reason it works so well is the one-time-only team-up of two avant-garde legends: the fiery, passionate Sam Rivers and the cerebral Anthony Braxton; they complement and contrast one another in energizing fashion throughout.

Upperseption - the name being a partly nonsensical coinage - were founded in Altenhundem, situated in the Sauerland in North Rhine-Westpalia, in 1970. They played progressive rock music, influenced by The Nice. The band didn't release anything back then. Only a few tapes survived, the initial ones recorded in their domestic garage and with a modest sound quality, and later ones from the studio. The Upperseption LP 'Cornicula', with recordings from 1970 and a sound which needs getting used to, was released in 2013. The CD 'Neo Gourage' contains some more as yet unreleased tracks. The first one, 'Rondo (69)', is a musical revelation, but not for sound purists. The other pieces are recordings of an excellent sound quality from various recording studios; the last - also excellent - recording is from a live performance. The 32-page booklet contains all important details on the subject. An LP edition is not scheduled.

If the name Heinrich von Herzogenberg is not yet familiar, it soon will be, due to the growing revival of his music and the increasing number of recordings made since the 1990s, notably in Germany. But this late nineteenth century composer's reputation may only be minimally enhanced by all the attention that's being paid to his oeuvre; for the more exposure it receives, the more people will come to the conclusion that Herzogenberg's works are far too imitative of his contemporaries.

The group started out as a trio in 2008 playing music in style of Billy COBHAM, Jeff BECK and other similar bands, and a demo cd followed the next year.
