    Sun Goddess is the 1974 album by jazz musician Ramsey Lewis. The album is known for featuring two songs backed by Earth, Wind & Fire and their Phenix Horns, but other songs include musicianship from Derf Reklaw, Cleveland Eaton and Maurice Jennings. You have the option of downloading two different CD masterings: the original Columbia Records CD released in 1990 or the 1999 Japanese pressing made by Sony Mastersound.

    Eberhard Weber played hundreds of concerts in his time as a member of the Jan Garbarek Group, and each of them included an extended feature for the bassist alone, often effectively a spontaneous composition rather than a ‘bass solo’ in strict jazz sense. For “Résumé” Weber has returned to recordings of these solo sequences and reworked them into an album with its own sense of flow. The unique sound of Eberhard’s customised electric bass is heard here mostly in the context of his own keyboard settings and treatments, but also augmented by the saxophones and overtone flute of Jan Garbarek (on three tracks) and by the percussion of Michael DiPasqua. Based on live recordings made between 1990 and 2007 at locations from Karlsruhe to Santiago, the album was mixed in the South of France by Weber, Manfred Eicher, Michael DiPasqua and Gérard de Haro in 2011.

In a recent interview on Nottingham TV (watch here) Jeanie performed two of the album's tracks and explained that (despite the wholesome shot on the cover) the album veers away from saccharine love songs covering disparate subjects such as truth seeking (Moments of Clarity); connection to the cosmos; sleep deprivation; and adultery. Not exactly what one would expect from the singer known for her convincing 50's vintage stylings."

    This is an old-fashioned two-tenor blowing date that matches together the relatively young Eric Alexander and the veteran Lin Halliday. As with the best tenor battles, the two co-stars show plenty of fire and intensity and consistently battle to a tie, with the audience being the real winner. With fine support given by pianist Jodie Christian, bassist Dan Shapera, and drummer Wilbur Campbell, the tenors jam hard on such tunes as "The Eternal Triangle," "Speak Low," and "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes," being reminiscent of the Sonny Stitt/Gene Ammons dates of the 1950s and '60s. Highly recommended to fans of this genre.

    The Swiss composer Richard Flury (1896–1967) felt the fascination for A Florentine Tragedy, Oscar Wilde’s drama of love and violence in Renaissance Italy, that also attracted his near-contemporary Alexander Zemlinsky: they set the same libretto. Flury responded to the text with this dark and swirling one-act verismo opera, sizzling with sexual tension, the vocal lines of the three characters unfolding over an orchestral texture remarkable for its plasticity and kaleidoscopic colour. It is preceded here by a dignified but impassioned operatic scena setting Grillparzer’s dramatic treatment of the suicide of the Greek poetess Sappho.

    Vol. 3 of the symphonic works of Josef Holbrooke contains further orchestral works demonstrating that he very much could also compose with humor and joy. Holbrooke’s symphonic poem Birds of Rhiannon has a great wealth of melodies that rightly enabled it to achieve great popularity and to register higher performance figures than all other works by its creator. The noisy and highly effective introduction in op. 37, 2 is followed by the presentation of the theme and fifteen variations in which Holbrooke is allowed to develop freely as a brilliant master of instrumentation. In the third-movement of his third symphony, Ships, he once again shows that he is a great master with an enormous wealth of ideas and skillfully employed orchestral colors at his command. In the finale we can practically see the merchant ships leaving the harbor and heading for their particular destinations with their various categories of cargo. As a result, Great Britain is portrayed as a nation ruling the waves of flourishing, international sea trade – which at the time when Holbrooke composed his work, it definitely was.
