The Essential Philip Glass is a spectacularly comprehensive, deeply hypnotic, and historically monumental modern classical anthology masterfully surveying the defining Masterworks of the legendary American composer and minimalist pioneer Philip Glass, released in 2002 by the prestigious Sony Classical label. Spanning nearly 75 minutes across 13 brilliantly curated masterpieces, this high-fidelity archival document captures the absolute creative peak of Glass's revolutionary compositional architecture. The compilation expertly structures a breathtaking journey through his most celebrated operatic triumphs, cinematic scores, and intimate solo frameworks. Listeners are treated to the soaring vocal tapestries of Lightning and Changing Opinion from "Songs From Liquid Days," the haunting saxophone textures of Façades, and monumental extracts from his historic portrait opera trilogy—including the driving choral forces of Satyagraha, the ancient brass-led majesty of Akhnaten, and the experimental rhythmic pulses of Einstein On The Beach. Concluding with the stark acoustic emotionalism of Metamorphosis Four and the brilliant, swirling strings of Closing, this definitive collection stands as a mandatory cornerstone and a prized collector's treasure for global purists of modern minimalism, elite avant-garde history, and essential contemporary classical art.

If you enjoy the electronic orchestrations of Vangelis or the refined Japanese sensibility of Kitaro, this album is a must. Sea and Sky is a masterpiece. Working with the brilliant arranger Paul Buckmaster, Stomu Yamashta brings together his virtuoso synthesizer and percussion playing with the richness and power of full symphonic orchestra. From the surging initial ascent to the spectacular final crescendo, Stomu brings you images of the sea and sky in all their grandeur, with echoes of Debussy's "La Mer," the passion of Berlioz and the lushness of the great film scores. With the exception of one inexplicable section of light jazz, every moment of this 1984 album shines with a special energy.

Icelandic composer Snorri Hallgrímsson’s upcoming album Nowhere Sessions is a deeply personal work that captures a rare moment of stillness. The work was recorded in a secluded cabin in the Icelandic countryside, a place surrounded by vast landscapes and new-total silence that has belonged to his family for decades. Far removed from studios and cities, the cabin stands “somewhere in the nowhere” of Iceland. For Hallgrímsson, it is not only a retreat but a place of memory and continuity. Choosing to record there was both a creative and emotional decision. The isolation shaped the session profoundly, allowing space, silence, and breath to become part of the recordings themselves.

The Wizard And The Forest Of All Dreams is a beautiful set of modern classical pieces for piano & choir (with a little keyboard added here and there). The lengthy tracks are prime examples of Rick's unique compositorial and arranging gift & ability - still you can hear influences from Bach or Haydn to Gershwin and Philip Glass, if you like. In times of "Crossover", Bocellis, Brightmans, ERA and Bonds or even Kennedys, this album could easily reach (want it or not) a large audience - then again it's of course by no means "pop". So if you like modern classical music or you're simply looking for a new way to relax (it works!) you should definitely give this album a try.

    Label: Atlantic Jazz | FLAC (tracks + .cue, log, scans) | 61:42 | 395 MB | 6 tracks
    Genre: Jazz, Post Bop

Chick Corea's Inner Space, released on the Atlantic Jazz label in 1988, is a highly significant and historically vital compilation that captures the legendary pianist at a critical, brilliant turning point in his early acoustic career. Compiling tracks recorded across legendary November 1966 and March 1968 sessions—including material originally found on his landmark album Tones for Joan's Bones and various unissued tracks from Atlantic's vaults—the collection stands as a masterclass in late-1960s avant-garde post-bop development. The album displays the astonishing compositional genius of Corea through expansive, adventurous deconstructions of classic originals like the shifting, Latin-tinged Litha, the driving title track, and his iconic jazz waltz Windows. Backed by a historic, rotating dream team of acoustic giants—including trumpet titan Woody Shaw, multi-reed master Joe Farrell, bassists Ron Carter and Steve Swallow, and drummers Joe Chambers and Grady Tate—Corea presents an uncompromised instrumental dialog. The album closes with the fascinating, classical-leaning Trio for Flute, Bassoon and Piano, showcasing a staggering breadth of vision that points directly toward the jazz-fusion revolution he would soon pioneer.

His first album of new material in 12 years sees the former Ultravox frontman divide the offering into two parts. The first half, World One: Music, consists of eight instrumental pieces, while the second half, World Two: Songs, features eight ‘proper’ songs (with vocals). This concept is said to be partly inspired by the time Midge spent during lockdown listening to instrumental music, and some of the work he heard whilst presenting THE SPACE on Scala Radio. He began writing what became a selection of instrumental pieces — “music shaped by reflection, uncertainty, and a strange kind of quiet”.

Crack all the jokes you want about Mike Oldfield and his Tubular Bells becoming the hit theme song for The Exorcist. While Oldfield is an amazing guitarist who could play with the best of them, with a lithe synth touch that became a trademark, the bottom line is that the man is a serious composer. All the proof one needs apart from his own records like Incantations and Hergest Ridge is this killer movie score. While Oldfield used a purely Western and neo-classical formal approach to write the music for Roland Joffé's dramatization of true events, his musical mates were among the best in the business at helping him to bring it off: David Bedford wrote arrangements and directed the choir, while Eberhard Schoener helped to conduct and direct another choir (!) and master percussionist Morris Pert lent his talents to the mix as well…
