The Refectory Hall at Leeds University is, judging by the wealth of talented band who have played there, an important venue in northern England. Pink Floyd played there three times. The first time was on November 8th, 1969 and doesn’t have a tape source. The February 28th, 1970 show, which is featured on Dying Of Boredom, is complete and the final appearance in Leeds, which was on January 23rd, 1971, has a fragmentary tape with “A Saucerful Of Secrets” and the blues encore. A previous commercial release of this tape can be found on Leeds 1970 (Ayanami-243) but Sigma is the first silver release of this tape. It is very good and clear but a bit “flat” and lacking in dynamics. It contains all of the music played the taper paused between songs cutting off many of the song introductions. Despite these limitations it is still a very nice document from the first couple months of the new decade.

Siouxsie & The Banshees Siouxsie and the Banshees were among the longest-lived and most successful acts to emerge from the London punk community; over the course of a career that lasted two decades, they evolved from an abrasive, primitive art punk band into a stylish, sophisticated unit that notched 18 Top 40 hits in the U.K. as well as a left-field Top 40 hit in the U.S. Throughout its numerous lineup changes and textural shifts, the group remained under the leadership of vocalist Siouxsie Sioux, born Susan Janet Ballion on May 27, 1957. She and the Banshees' initial lineup emerged from the Bromley Contingent, a notorious group of rabid Sex Pistols fans; inspired by the growing punk movement, Dallion adopted the name Siouxsie and formed the Banshees in September 1976. In addition to bassist Steven Severin and guitarist Marco Pirroni, the band included drummer John Simon Ritchie, who assumed the name Sid Vicious; they debuted later that year at the legendary Punk Festival held at London's 100 Club, where their entire set consisted of a savage, 20-minute rendition of "The Lord's Prayer." Soon after, Vicious joined the Sex Pistols, while Pirroni went on to join Adam and the Ants.

David Lee Roth With a larger-than-life personality and a powerful voice that conveys all the energy, celebration, and hedonism of an all-night block party, David Lee Roth is one of rock music's best and most exciting frontmen. Fairport Convention's only concept album was built around the story of John "Babbacombe" Lee, a convicted killer who survived three attempts to hang him. Cut by the four-man Fairport lineup of Simon Nicol, Dave Swarbrick, Dave Mattacks, and Dave Pegg, the original album was a self-contained work with a specific beginning and ending. It's also never been much more than cult item in the group's early catalog, despite some spirited playing on "Little Did I Think," "I Was Sixteen, Pt. 2," "St. Ninian's Isle/Trumpet Hornpipe," and "Sailor's Alphabet." The slipcased "Island Remasters" keeps the concept and the original album's content intact – with killer sound as expected, and each song now getting its own index number – and appends a pair of bonus tracks that justify the purchase. The first is "Farewell to a Poor Man's Son," a "lost" song by the group from the BBC program on John Lee that was the inspiration for the album, and "Breakfast in Mayfair," both from an earlier lineup of the band featuring Jerry Donahue.

THE OPENING NIGHT FROM MICK JAGGER’S 1988 JAPANESE TOUR • In Japan, where rock & roll fans consider the Rolling Stones hon mono – “the real thing” – Mick Jagger‘s eight-show solo concert tour there in 1988 sold out in a matter of hours.

This Quebecois band has three phases. First came the psych period under which they were known as Morse Code Transmission and made two psych albums in 71 & 72 sung in English. The second phase saw their names shortened and with the Quebec prog explosion under way decided to switch to French singing. The three albums that followed are real gems of progressive music oscillating between Genesis and Barclay James Harvest but the French texts (sometimes highly impressive) gave them a sound of their own. They disbanded, as the disco wave became a Tsunami in La Belle Province only to reform in 83 to make a best-forgotten English-sung album and again in 95 for a much better one again in French.

Odes (1979) features the most inspired collaboration imaginable. It is a collection of compositions by Vangelis with vocals by the great operatic singer Irene Papas. The vocals, in Greek, become an important instrument of Vangelis' sound design. He has a knack for knowing when to push the instrumental and when to allow Papas' vocals to dominate - even to the point of some a cappella renderings. Papas is as sharp as ever; Vangelis is always right there. The atmospheres are strong and the soundscapes are dramatic and dynamic. This hard-to-get classic is essential. It is worth every effort to procure it. The only logical comparisons are Vas, Sheila Chandra, Lisa Gerrard, Natacha Atlas, and Yungchen Lhamo…
