Although the Crusaders could not have known it at the time, their recording of "Street Life" (which features a memorable vocal by Randy Crawford) was a last hurrah for the 20-year old group. Their recordings of the next few years would decline in interest until the band gradually faded away in the '80s. However this particular set is well worth picking up for the 11-minute title cut and there is good playing by the three original members (Wilton Felder on tenor, soprano and electric bass, keyboardist Joe Sample and drummer Stix Hooper) along with guitarist Barry Finnerty; horn and string sections, plus additional guitarists are utilized on Sample's commercial but listenable arrangements.

Celebrating this timeless artist, a priceless collection delving into Randy Crawford's peerless recordings. So much more than a chronological checklist of the international award-winning singer/ songwriter's most popular hits, this 57-song set includes the cream of her Warner Bros. Catalogue recorded between 1976-1993, drawn from eleven albums (along with tracks from the classic all- star live jazz LP, Casino Lights) that all reflect the soul-baring breadth and depth of Randy's musicality through her instantly recognizable voice. Disc 1 features 20 roots R&B, Jazz, standards and the bluesier side of Randy's balladry. Disc 2 features 19 of Randy's lushest love songs. Disc 3 is a smorgasbord of Randy's dazzling shapeshifting musical styles that includes her signature breakthrough hit with The Crusaders' 'Street Life', the sassy dance rock jam 'Blue Flame', covers of Journey's 'Who's Crying Now' and Kenny Loggins' 'Who's Right, Who's Wrong', her movie soundtrack classics 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door', 'One Hello' and 'Don't Wanna Be Normal', the rare European one-off 45 'Give Peace a Chance', and the oft-covered anthem 'You Might Need Somebody' after which this anthology was named.

Randy (born Veronica Crawford) is a brilliant American soul singer who had a UK top five hit (Street life) as un-credited vocalist with the Crusaders in 1973, then had two UK top five hits (One day I'll fly away, Almaz) in the eighties as a solo singer. Randy never achieved this level of success in her homeland. Apart from those three major hits, Randy had two other UK top twenty hits (You might need somebody, Rainy night in Georgia) and several minor hits, three of which (Imagine, Secret combination, One hello) are included here. Most of the songs here are originals but, with her outstanding voice, Randy is a great interpreter of other people's songs, as this collection shows. This collection truly is the very best of Randy Crawford, one of the finest soul singers there has ever been.

Nice, highly stylized album by a versatile vocalist whose trembling sound and eclectic nature have made her tough for record labels to market. This album, like her others, was all over the idiomatic lot and expressively sung, if at times overproduced.

Quentin Tarantino established himself as one of the few filmmakers to effectively use pop music with his first film Reservoir Dogs, a movie where the music was integral to the success of the film yet also worked well as a collection of songs. Jackie Brown, Tarantino's long-awaited third feature, finds him exploring new territory, creating an homage to blaxploitation flicks as well as a surprisingly subtle character study and love story, and its soundtrack appropriately finds him in new territory as well. The soundtrack still features snippets of dialogue, which simply aren't as effective separated from the film as those from Pulp Fiction, but the unified collection of '70s soul and funk is refreshing. He has wisely selected a batch of songs that haven't been worn out by oldies radio, building the bulk of the album with cult favorites like Bobby Womack's "Across 110th Street," Bill Withers' "Who Is He (And What Is He to You?)," Randy Crawford's "Street Life," Minnie Riperton's "Inside My Love".
