Just as the title implies, 25 Years of Greatness is a career-spanning 32-track compilation covering most of the highlights of the Wolfe Tones' first quarter of a century. There is the important caveat, however, that like many folk groups, the Wolfe Tones have recorded many of their most popular songs several times, and this collection tends to favor more recent and/or more arranged versions of the Spartan originals that graced early albums like Let the People Sing. That's not as much of a problem as it would be with some groups, however, as the Wolfe Tones have wisely resisted any temptation to "update," "modernize," or otherwise ruin a traditional Irish folk style that has worked for them for so long; even the Fairport Convention-like electric track of the new "Rock On Rockall" has a bracingly traditional feel to it. This is the Wolfe Tones set to have if you're having just one, but there's plenty more where this came from.

Frankie Gavin and Alec Fin provide a vintage 1977 duet of Irish fiddle and bouzouki (large octave mandolin) that has withstood the test of time. Frankie and Alec are founding members of the group De Danann, a group that only recently retired after over 30 years of great music. Frankie is a legendary fiddle player known for his fast and fluid style. Alec is playing counterpoint and double lead bouzouki in complete synch. This could be called the typical old pub style back when it was rare to find more than two or three musicians playing together. The happiness of the music is overpowering and immediately stimulates toe tapping if not Irish style dancing.

Rum Sodomy & the Lash is the second studio album by the London-based folk punk band The Pogues, released on 5 August 1985. The album reached number 13 in the UK charts. The track "A Pair of Brown Eyes", based on an older Irish tune, reached number 72 in the UK singles chart. "The Old Main Drag" later appeared on the soundtrack to the film My Own Private Idaho. The album's title is taken from a quotation attributed to Winston Churchill: "Don't talk to me about naval tradition. It's nothing but rum, sodomy, and the lash." The title was suggested by drummer Andrew Ranken, who said "it seemed to sum up life in our band". The cover artwork painted by Peter Mennim is based on The Raft of the Medusa, a Romantic-era painting by Theodore Géricault, with the band members' faces replacing those of the men on the raft.

The 1977 classic "FIELDVOLE MUSIC" continued the trend of bizarre titles for Free Reed's LPs - this one taken from the nickname of cartoonist and melodeon maestro TONY HALL. Tony was the accompanist of choice for many 70s folk stars - he was on June Tabor & Maddy Prior's 'Silly Sisters' tour in 1976 - and for this exquisite Free Reed LP, he was joined by Nic Jones & Johnny Moynihan to create possibly the greatest selection of classic melodeon tunes & songs ever recorded. Once again, the production was in the hands of Nic Kinsey, and we include 7 extra tracks from the 1977 sessions. Booklet notes are by the shanty man & historian STAN HUGILL.

In the 1960s and '70s there was growing concern within Celtic music circles that the perceived lack of interest and participation could jeopardize the future of that tradition. With the arrival and subsequent success of artists like Altan, Seamus Egan, Eileen Ivers, and Ashley MacIsaac, those worries amount to nothing but a distant memory. The educational opportunities are now abundant, the development of talent is ongoing, and the fruits of these efforts are being harvested routinely. One of the 1990s' most exciting and gifted fiddlers is Natalie MacMaster from Cape Breton, the wonderfully Celtic-rich region of Nova Scotia.

2014 compilation. The Dubliners are regarded by many as the fathers of Irish pop music, undoubtedly responsible for bringing ballads & traditional music from the small clubs and pubs to the international pop spotlight. They paved the way and influenced future followers: Planxty, the Pogues & U2. After 50 years on the road the Dubliners officially retired at the end of 2012. Not Bad Records.

The internationally famous quartet always gave it 100% on rousing vocals and equally rousing playing and knew how to pick the 'punters' songs.
These recordings might well be from the 1960s but that only goes to highlight the power and passion in the original sessions.

A modern praise & worship band founded in Bangor, Northern Ireland, the Rend Collective (formerly known as the Rend Collective Experiment) is exactly what the name says, more a spiritual and creative collective than a band per se, blending praise lyrics with a kind of experimental folk-rock approach. Growing out of a group of Christian friends looking for a way to bring spirituality more in line with the complexities and confusions of life in the 21st century, the band, at least when it tours, consists primarily of drummer Gareth Gilkeson, vocalists Will Herron and Chris Llewellyn, percussionist and keyboardist Ali Gilkeson, horn player and accordionist Bridget Herron, and bassist Patrick Thompson. Recorded mostly in churches and homes, Rend Collective's debut album, Organic Family Hymnal, appeared in 2010, followed by Homemade Worship by Handmade People in 2012, both released by Kingsway Music.
