As always with Tricky, the right idea for pop isn't necessarily just right for him. Beats, of course; songs, sure; a band, who could say no? And right, individual tracks connect pretty good–hot lesbian porn, you devil you. Yet though his soundscapes be obscure and forbidding, they're what he's great at; his rap affinities and rock dreams are off the point, especially in the studio. So the best thing about these shapely selections is that they remain obscure and forbidding as they stand up and announce themselves. Second-best is their scorn for criminal pretensions, always a boon from a borderline nihilist.

Their first EP was released in 1989, simply called Truly but sometimes titled after the first song on the EP, Heart And Lungs. The group would release an EP by Capitol but their two albums would remain in the indie world. This one was done by Sub Pop.

Spiritchaser is the seventh studio album by Dead Can Dance, and the last before Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard went their separate ways. It expands on its exploration of world music, and like Into the Labyrinth, was recorded at Quivvy Church, Perry's personal studio in Ireland. The album was dedicated to Lisa Gerrard's deceased brother, Mark Gerrard. The track "Indus" contains a melody that is very similar to that of "Within You Without You", a Beatles song that George Harrison wrote and recorded with Indian musicians in 1967. Although not deliberate, Perry and Gerrard were asked to contact Harrison for his permission to use it; he granted it, but the record company insisted that they give him partial songwriting credit on "Indus".

Ah, the freedom of the middle-aged indie musician in the 2020s. With (at least) a couple of decades between today and their most memorable flirtations with underground notoriety, the artists who occupied swaths of column inches in Melody Maker and Option are now comfortably removed from any sort of modern relevance, saving them from a need (or desire) to try to fit into contemporary cultural conversation. As opposed to the classic rockers of the previous generation who never let us forget them thanks to incessant FM radio play and unending appearances at state fairs and exurban casinos, the reappearance of Lollapalooza-era artists is generally a welcome, if curious, occurrence.

The Comsat Angels were an English post-punk band from Sheffield, England, initially active from 1978 to 1995. Their music has been described as "abstract pop songs with sparse instrumentation, many of which were bleak and filled with some form of heartache". They have been credited as being an influence on later post-punk revival bands such as Blacklist, Bell Hollow, Editors and Interpol. The Comsat Angels toured heavily in the UK and western Europe, especially in the Netherlands; the band's two concerts in August 1982 in Iceland had a strong influence on the music scene in Reykjavík. They also toured the United States twice. Their music has been extensively reissued and recompiled since 1995 by various record labels.

Tricky is back with an album named after the Bristol neighborhood where he grew up. It details the travels and travails of his youth, resulting in an eclectic aural history of his diverse upbringing. He reaches into post-punk, Two-Tone, reggae, hip-hop, and pop, twisting them into surreal songscapes. Tricky uses his astonishingly eclectic band and a host of great undiscovered singers to create the most varied and accessible set of his career.

Released in 1996, Fire Extinguisher is a wonderful bootleg by Nirvana from a show in at Nakano Sun Plaze in Tokyo, Japan on 19 February, 1992, soundboard sourced. The band still a trio consisting of Kurt, Krist (who was still listed as "Chris"), and Dave, were still in top form, performing songs from both albums and a single here and there, along with subtle humor from Kurt. This would end up being Nirvana's last Japanese show. Laura are the company who put this out.

Growing up in public is a tough gig, but Australian trio the Goon Sax don’t have a lot of choice. They were still at school when their 2016 debut album Up to Anything was released, with prosaic, witty songs about unrequited crushes, Saturday jobs and dates ruined by sweaty hands and bad haircuts. It would probably have been compared to the early, Jonathan Richman-indebted work of the Go-Betweens even if frontman Louis Forster’s dad hadn’t been the Go-Betweens’ Robert Forster. Frankly, if you’re a trio from Brisbane with a female drummer, dealing in smart, twitchy-but-melodic guitar rock with lyrics majoring in affairs of the heart, you’re going to provoke comparison to the Go-Betweens – who were all of those things 40 years ago – regardless of whether your old fella was in them or not.

Brit and Ivor Novello award winning songwriter, plus platinum-selling, chart-topping artist Tom Odell returns with his fourth album, 'monsters', due to be released June 25th. After a dark period of mental health stalked most of his 2018 and 19. Slowly but surely, Odell alchemised that experience into a new album. He also realised his broader lyrical horizons needed to be matched by a musical expansion, with a lot of the songs on the album leaning into a more electronic, bedroom pop sound. It was a move underpinned by both necessity and a desire to explore.

This version of Unearth are not the Boston-based metal band, but a Seattle grunge band from the early 1990's who only released one album on New Rage Records called Everything Was Beautiful And Nothing Hurt. New Rage were a subsidiary of the more famous C/Z label and Unearth were getting a good share of press in Seattle publications. They had released two singles before the album came out in 1993, only for the group to break up soon after its release. Some critics felt Unearth had the potential to be up there with Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Mudhoney. The album was recorded, mixed, and co-produced by Jack Endino.
