It would be accurate to say that the quartet that Peter Bernstein has assembled for his remarkable new album is making its debut, but it would also be more than a little misleading. While it’s true that this all-star group – which teams the acclaimed guitarist with pianist Brad Mehldau, bassist Vicente Archer, and legendary drummer Al Foster – had never played together prior to recording BETTER ANGELS, its members all share deep and long-standing relationships. The result is the best of both worlds: striking interplay that can’t help but thrive on the chemistry generated by the various connections, combined with the high-wire energy derived from delving into the unknown. BETTER ANGELS extends that combination of the comfortable and the unfamiliar to Bernstein’s choice of repertoire, which pairs thoughtfully selected standards with bold new original compositions.

The Bee Gees released their first single in 1963, but they didn't have a hit in their homeland of Australia until 1965. It took another two years for them to crack the Top 20 in the U.K. and U.S., after which the hits came steadily until the band temporarily split in late 1969. The trio would later re-form and experience much greater success, but Ace's 2017 compilation To Love Somebody: The Songs of the Bee Gees 1966-1970 concentrates on the songs they wrote during their first act, a time when they were seen as songwriters as much as performers.

While the world came to a stop during the pandemic, the three-piece retreated in the studio to write and record upcoming album ‘Drif’. In the band’s fashion, they sought for forgotten songs, made ruffling leaves into instruments and wrote lyrics spreading messages of love for each other and respect for nature. ‘Drif’ will be HEILUNG’s most immersive and successful work to date. In their own words: “Drif means “gathering”. A throng of people, a horde, a crowd, a pack. In symbiosis with the album title, Drif consists of a flock, a collection, a gathering, a collage of songs, that much like little flames were seeking towards each other, to join, to bond, to create, and be greater together. This album has very clearly dictated its own path. Our attempts to tame it was repeatedly fruitless and once we came to this realization, the creative flow surged forward with immense force. So much so that sometimes it felt like the songs wrote themselves. All the songs on Drif have their own stories. They have each their place and sense of belonging, with inspiration not only from Northern Europe, but from the ancient great civilisations.”

2013 collection. The late 60s were a time of incredible change in black American Music. The World Needs Changing reflects the growing confidence of black music in a decade of change. Soul, jazz and funk was a mirror onto the black urban world, and represented a growing confidence and sophistication. Records like Lonnie Liston Smith's 'Expansions' (presented here in it's rare 7 inch version) or Leon Thomas' 'Just in Time to See the Sun' show Jazz musicians reaching for the discos without losing their spiritual self. Gil Scott Heron, Esther Marrow, Darrow Fletcher and our super rare title track show the political struggle continued to bubble away. The majority of the music made at the time was still aimed firmly at the feet, and there are rare collectors items by the Original Soul Patrol, Ceaser 830, club classics by the Willard Posey Reunion and Little Eva Harris whose medley of 'Get Ready/ Uptight' has been massive in London for a couple of years now. This 4 CD set tells the story of music and people who moved from one corner of the US to another - namely the southerners who relocated to the West Coast in the 30s and 40s, bringing country music along with them. On the way they created not only new music but films glorifying the cowboy lifestyle and a new record company (Capitol) sprang up to put out all the songs. Artists such as Tennessee Ernie Ford and Cliffie Stone epitomised the trend and the tracks collected together on this set, along with the authoritative liner notes tell the story of the great move west and of a time before country automatically meant Nashville.

One of the many jazzmen who started out playing hard bop but went electric during the fusion era, Joe Sample was, in the late '50s, a founding member of the Jazz Crusaders along with trombonist Wayne Henderson, tenor saxman Wilton Felder, and drummer Stix Hooper. The Crusaders' debt to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers wasn't hard to miss - except that the L.A.-based unit had no trumpeter, and became known for its unique tenor/trombone front line. Sample, a hard-swinging player who could handle chordal and modal/scalar improvisation equally well, stuck to the acoustic piano during The Crusaders' early years - but would place greater emphasis on electric keyboards when the band turned to jazz-funk in the early '70s and dropped "Jazz" from its name.
