Hasse Fröberg & Musical Companion (HFMC) is a band formed by its namesake, Hasse Fröberg. Hasse is most famous for his work as a vocalist and occasional guitarist of symphonic prog titans The Flower Kings. After The Flower Kings went on hiatus around 2008, Hasse decided to form a new band in order to present "songs that [he has] written through the years that don't fit the The Flower Kings formula". Hasse handpicked some great musicians to release songs that he had written through the years. The result is available on 5 albums with 'We Are The Truth', released on 26 Nov. 2021. US-based, Grammy-nominated Rwandan and Ugandan singer-songwriter Somi’s Zenzile: The Reimagination of Miriam Makeba lovingly celebrates the musical contributions of the late "first lady of African song." With intergenerational contributions by Seun Kuti, Thandiswa Mazwai, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Nduduzo Makhathini, and Angelique Kidjo, a pan-Africanist thread runs through this 17-track commemoration, released on what would have been Makeba’s 90th birthday. Articulating Makeba’s sonic vocabulary, Somi distils messages of womanhood, homecoming, social justice, and political strife while employing and re-imagining several idioms. Scouring Makeba’s catalogue, South African jazz of yesteryear coalesces with contemporary contexts to both memorialize and reinvigorate. The sanguine keys of the Gregory Porter-assisted “Love Tastes Like Strawberries” meet the arresting vocal performances of both Somi and folk artist Msaki on “Khuluma”. It’s the electronically-tinged rework of “Pata Pata” that best encapsulates Somi’s aims by crafting melodies with darker hues to explore Makeba’s ethos more broadly.

When the Cowboy Junkies released their first album in 1986, Whites Off Earth Now!!, eight of the nine songs were covers, and their second, the 1988 breakthrough hit The Trinity Session, introduced them to a larger audience with their interpretations of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane" and Patsy Cline's "Walkin' After Midnight." Recording other people's songs and giving them a sound of their own is deeply ingrained in the Cowboy Junkies' working method, so it's no great surprise that they've chosen to release an album devoted entirely to covers. 2022's Songs of the Recollection features five new recordings of tunes from artists they admire, along with four previously released tracks that appeared on EPs (Vic Chesnutt's "Marathon" and the Cure's "Seventeen Seconds") or tribute albums (Gram Parsons' "Ooh Las Vegas" and Gordon Lightfoot's "The Way I Feel").

Of the great composers it was Schubert who devoted himself most seriously to the piano duet as an independent genre. He wrote more than 30 works for the medium, amongst which is some truly great music which is sadly under-represented in the catalogue.
