Recorded live at Mitchell's Studio Club in Los Angeles in 1966 and released via Contemporary Records in 1993, I'm All Smiles features the legendary jazz pianist Hampton Hawes in a spectacular trio performance alongside bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Donald Bailey. This release captures Hawes during a creatively fertile period where his traditional hard bop roots were expanding into more open, post-bop harmonic explorations. The material gives the trio plenty of room to stretch out, with several tracks clocking in around the ten-minute mark. Hawes displays absolute mastery over his instrument, delivering fluid, rhythmically driving lines that are perfectly complemented by Mitchell's inventive, melodic bass work and Bailey's crisp, highly responsive drumming. From the swinging title track to a deeply moving, extended rendition of The Shadow Of Your Smile and an expansive performance of Searchin', this record stands as an incredible testament to the telepathic chemistry, spontaneous creativity, and enduring brilliance of Hampton Hawes in a live club setting.
