Synthpop, Electronic, New Wave, Post-Punk, Dance-Rock

UK three CD collection. This release charts the birth of synthesized pop music in the 1980s and ultimately the roots of contemporary electronic dance music. The importance and continued popularity of '80s pop is not to be underestimated, and the emergence of serious synthesized music producers in Kraftwerk, The Human League, Heaven 17, OMD, Yazoo, Ultravox, Talk Talk, Japan, Devo, Sparks, Gary Numan, New Order and the Pet Shop Boys, all of whom massively pushed the boundaries in experimenting with (mainly) Roland synths in this era, ultimately showed the way for the House and Techno producers of the '90s to the present day. Within this more serious side there was also some brilliant, pure Synthpop from the Thompson Twins, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Thomas Dolby, Simple Minds, Propaganda, Erasure, China Crisis, Belouis Some, the Lotus Eaters, a Flock of Seagulls, Howard Jones, Blancmange and the Associates.

Following general practice at the time, this American EP actually lasts the length of a regular album with its varying mixes and otherwise unavailable songs, all from various English versions of the original single. In terms of whether it's all worth it, that's something else. The lead track itself makes for another dramatic Erasure high point, appearing in three separate versions here. Besides a 7" mix that slightly truncates the album take without doing much more to it, there's the lead-off "krucial" mix, a reasonable enough expansion of the original via the work of Bob Kraushaar. Meanwhile, the "act 2" mix, handled by Mark Saunders, gets an even sprightlier punch-up, probably resulting in the best mix of the bunch. As for the two new songs, the first is "Sweet, Sweet Baby," featuring a flat, vocoder vocal (possibly from Clarke!) along with various other odd little drop-ins over the beat…

Released three years after Chorus, I Say I Say I Say found Erasure for the first time fully interested in essentially staying in place. The album as a whole is at base an attractively redressed version of what the duo had already done, the occasional slight surprise notwithstanding. While Clarke in particular shows some virtuosity with his performances, helped by Human League/Heaven 17 veteran Martyn Ware's production, I Say lacks any real novelty (certainly Bell's singing isn't going to change any earlier perceptions, positive or negative). It's not as experimentally indulgent as the self-titled album or unfortunately unmemorable as Cowboy, but it's still not quite the group at its sharp pop finest track for track.

A gently propulsive track from Wild!, Blue Savannah makes for a pleasant if not a completely stunning single for Erasure; the band itself once amusingly claimed it was "Erasure meets the Eagles!" The pleasure in this single lies in the various remixes and extra tracks that come scattered throughout. The title track itself benefits from two complementary remixes, "Der Deutsche Mix I and II", the latter of which adds a reasonable enough breakbeat and some fun synth soloing to create a low-key, Manchester-tinged dancefloor filler. There's one further remix from Mark Saunders that combines his usual fun beats and upbeat feeling to the original, not to mention adding a bit of twangy country guitar. Also on the disc is an okay enough original B-side, "Runaround in the Underground"…

Cowboy was the eighth studio album by Erasure, released in 1997 by Mute Records in the UK. In the U.S., it was released by Madonna's former label Maverick Records. Cowboy was produced by Gareth Jones and Neil McLellan and marked the band's return to more simplistic three-minute synthpop music. After disappointing sales and chart placing of their last studio album Erasure, Cowboy returned the duo to the Top 10 of the UK Albums Chart and it contains three singles (two of which hit the UK Top 30). In the U.S., Cowboy greatly improved Erasure's Billboard 200 peak over their previous album and first single "In My Arms" gave them another Hot 100 entry. Sales also improved in Germany, where Cowboy peaked at number thirty-four.
