Although all eight selections on this CD have been played many times before (the only song not a boppish warhorse is John Lewis' "Milano"), altoist Frank Morgan makes each of the pieces sound fresh. As producer John Snyder is quoted in the liner notes, this is bop without cliches. Morgan, who is assisted by pianist Rodney Kendrick, drummer Leroy Williams and either Curtis Lundy or Ray Drummond on bass, digs into such songs as "Well You Needn't," "A Night In Tunisia" and an 11 ½ minute version of "Half Nelson," coming up with some surprising twists and plenty of viable ideas. A fine effort.

Indisciplined Lucy is a neo Progressive band from Sweden (Uppsala, just like The Flower Kings!), also the second line up signed by the RectAngular label. Both aspects of the band are treated equally, and the electric side isn't much present as its classical counterpart. "About The Black Eyed Girl" is a theatrical concept album recorded in 1999, that shows competent musicians, diverse instrumentation (Violin, cello, percussions…) and Pelle Lindroth's expressive singing. If you missed something from the story, you just have to know that the lyrics are all printed in the booklet, along with some suggestive photographs. You can now follow the mysterious adventures of Alladin the Clown and his muse.

It is particularly magical that two extremely contrasting musicians such as Craig Peyton and Benjamin Verdery could not only sustain a long-term close friendship, but could also unite their musical talents to form Latitude. Their self-titled debut album is a perfect fusion of their distinctive musical backgrounds, creating a new sound which both Peyton and Verdery agree is "magic." A certain synergy is evident in the memorable textures and subtle rhythms of synthesizer and classical guitar. Says Craig, "Ben’s formed his whole career around melody and I’ve done the same with rhythm tracks." It is this unique perspective of each musician that makes Latitude truly special.

Opéra Sauvage is a soundtrack album by the Greek electronic composer Vangelis, released in 1979. It is the score for the nature documentary of the same title by French filmmaker Frédéric Rossif. Mélanie Bonis was one of the most interesting and prolific composers in France in the 20 years before the First World War. Married in 1883 to the industrialist Édouard Domange, her duties as a housewife and mother distanced her from Parisian musical life yet did not consign her to silence: following her studies at the Paris Conservatoire she had mélodies and piano pieces issued by various publishers.

Polyphonic 14th-century Italian secular music seems to emerge out of nowhere in the history of music. Nevertheless, this tradition – which often goes by the name Ars Nova – fits seamlessly into the history of Italian culture. Our knowledge of it has been pieced together from relatively few sources, which nevertheless reveal three distinct phases. In its first phase, Italian Ars Nova spread out from universities, including those of Padua and Bologna, which had strong links with the dominant and contemporaneous French Ars Nova. In the second phase, the centre of 14th-century Italian polyphony seems to shift markedly to Florence. The final phase, which bridged the late 1300s and early 1400s, shows the influence of intense cultural exchange brought about by an international circulation of musicians and poets caused by the political instability of the papacy’s return from Avignon to Rome and the consequent heightened mobility among the various courts and their entourages.

Australian born Rob Tognoni is one of the most exhilarating electric guitar players around today. Born in Tasmania, Rob Tognoni (a.k.a. A reissue of an album originally released in Japan in 1994 under the title Voice Mail, 1995's Battle Lines continues John Wetton's career path over the preceding 15 years – there's more pop than prog in his prog pop, in other words. Basically indistinguishable from a late-period Asia album, the ten tracks on Battle Lines were mostly co-written by Wetton and keyboardist Bob Marlette. The re-release garnered a new cover and bonus track - acoustic version of the title track.
