Fred Jacobs, Dutch advocate of the theorbo, that outlandish scale lute that became the rage at court and also in the opera in 17th century Europe continues his solo recital series of theorbo music for Metronome with an album devoted to the music of Kapsperger. The theorbo’s most notable exponent in Italy in the early 17th century was the remarkable gentleman composer-performer Giovanni Girolamo Kapsperger who though known as Il Tedesco della Tiorba- “The German Theorbo-player” was born in Venice of German noble family and spent his life composing and performing in Italy and serving the papal court in Rome.

The recordings are typical DHM with superb clarity and dynamic range. The mastering to digital is excellent, and the booklet accompanying the series, while brief, is informative. The only unifying these here is baroque Italian composers, but it's extremely easy to fill a collection ten times this size with material from that category. What we end up with in these ten discs is a lovely mix of known and unknown, each pleasant to listen to and discover, and there's no listener fatigue at all working through these discs.

The Colossus projects have become real landmarks, as far as good ol' vintage Progressive rock music is concerned! This project jointly published by the Musea label and the finnish magazine Colossus is called Giallo!, and subtitled "One Suite For The Murderer". That Progressive rock concept-album has been inspired by the famous film by Dario Argento called "Deep Red" (1975). The story has been divided in three chapters, and each band participating has chosen one, to make a suite inspired by it. Add to this a short "intro" and "outro" performed by Alfio Costa on keyboards. The latter is also featured in the first track, performed by Dark Session, an offshoot of the Italian band Tilion. Leviathan and Floating State are the two other artists featured in this disc…

For a long time, a large portion of Handel’s early opera Rodrigo was thought to have been lost. It was not until 1974 that the printed libretto turned up again and nine years later the third act was found in the Earl of Shaftesbury’s Handel collection. On August 29, 1984, finally, the work was revived during the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music and in 2019 it’s on the programme at the Göttingen International Handel Festival. The opera narrates a freely adapted version of the end to the regency of the Last Visigoth King Roderich. In the libretto by Francesco Silvani, however, the reason behind it is less the lust for power on the part of his opponents than the thirst for vengeance of his spurned mistress. It was back in 1707 in Rome that George Frideric Handel wrote Rodrigo.

Cipriano de Rore, a native of Ronse, embodies with his music the multifacetedness and cosmopolitan influence of the Franco-Flemish epoch. His significance in music history can hardly be overestimated, and his extraordinary position between the prima practica and seconda practica makes him simultaneously a guardian of the tradition and a trailblazer of the “new music.

The Vogler Quartet Interprets Dvorák, Vol. 3. Individuality developed and revealed in ensemble performance – herein surely lies the secret of the Vogler Quartet, which has pursued a unique career with an unchanged membership ever since 1985. FonoForum wrote of Vol. 1 of our complete edition featuring all of Dvorák’s quartets, “The Vogler Quartet seeks rich sonority, sharp rhythmic contouring, and warm, earthy colors. In every respect a successful beginning for this complete edition.” Vol. 3 of our edition by these highly acclaimed interpreters, which also includes the String Quintet and Piano Quintet, presents more quartets by Dvorák. His Quartet No. 3 in D major, over sixty minutes in duration, ranks as what is surely one of the most extensive string quartets in the entire literature.

Il Complesso Barocco recorded two CDs with madrigals by Rossi and Lotti in the late 90s. In the 16th century, madrigal originated in Rome as a worldly vocal work. The text was important and was used as a starting point for the music. This form quickly became popular in Venice and other important cities. Also in the 17th century many composers continued to compose madrigals, but these were more modern, with dissonants and bold harmonies. Rossi used mostly older texts and managed to set them to music with great precision. Lotti lived decades later and composed expressively, with a lot of chromaticism.

Composed in Rome in 1707, Clori, Tirsi e Fileno is one of Handel’s longer Italian cantatas and, if not quite matching the brilliance of Apollo e Dafne or Aci, Galatea e Polifemo, it remains a thoroughly engaging piece. Nicholas McGegan’s lively 1990 recording captures the music’s air of beguiling insouciance, Lorraine Hunt is in sweetly majestic voice as the capricious shepherdess Clori and there are deft obbligato flourishes from Elizabeth Blumenstock (violin) and Paul O’Dette (archlute). In sum, a delight.

The opera opened in 1786, the same year as Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro , and both were revived in Vienna three years later. In the revival of Il bubero di buon cuore , since Martín y Soler was then in the court of Catherine the Great in St. Petersburg, Mozart wrote two new arias for Madama Lucilla. “Chi sa qual sia l’affano” and “Vado, ma dove, o Dei?,” which are beautifully sung on this recording by Véronique Gens, the first aria on CD 1, track 18, and the second on CD 2, track 4.

This is an excellent recording of Handel's "other" Acis – an Italian cantata he composed during a visit to Naples ten years before he wrote the more famous English masque Acis and Galatea. Emmanuelle Haïm and Le Concert d'Astrée play with pathos, imagination, and impeccable style, never forgetting that, in a work for such intimate forces, maintaining musical momentum and variety is the key to success. Sandrine Piau (Aci), Sara Mingardo (Galatea), and Laurent Naouri (Polifemo) are perfectly cast; Piau's crystalline soprano and Mingardo's warm, full-bodied mezzo blend wonderfully in their duets, sounding as if they have sung together for years, and both of them deliver spectacular solo moments.

Nuova Era Internazionale is proud to present the first edition of the original version, the only available on the market. The live performance recorded in the Theatre Bellini in Catania is conducted by Andrea Licata. Bianca e Fernando was one of Bellini's best success when it was first performed in 1826 and further revised in 1828, its popularity never arose in the following years and it remains probably the less performed opera among the ten completed by the Sicilian composer. Bellini was only 25 years old when he completed it for the Theatre San Carlo in Naples where it was performed with the name Bianca e Gernando.

One can easily appreciate this early William Christie recording with Capella Coloniensis, a group originally formed in 1954 (!) to perform baroque works in historically informed performances. Christie masters this orchestra well, and the playing is impeccable. The casting is excellent, including some of the great singers of the time: Emma Kirkby, in her prime, Agnes Mellon, Dominique Visse and David Cordier, among others. There is even a male soprano, Randall K. Wong, a rare type of singer indeed.

The characters move in a musical setting which is perhaps less revolutionary than Pergolesi's had been, the scenic action moves at a slower pace, with longer arias. Pergolesi's means are certainly more limited than Paisiello's, his vocal styles more essential and specific — his Uberto is more desperate and his Serpina craftier, while in Paisiello's opera the characters take on a more worldly and fugy-rounded form. In Paisiello's work Uberto and Serpina sing with greater awareness of the fact that they are actors in an institutionalised theatre, and their arias could at times belong to a different text, as for example the splendid 'Donne Vaghe' with which Serpina opens the second act or the delightful duet 'Donne infeste', whose music sounds more like an act of love than the celebration of deep disagreement. These two episodes, whose pertinence to the development of the plot is quite questionable, do not appear in Pergolesi's text.
