Having cut an album of standards on his first Warner Brothers album, In a Sentimental Mood (1989), Dr. John turned for its follow-up to a collection of New Orleans standards. On an album he described in the liner notes as "a little history of New Orleans music," Dr. John returned to his hometown and set up shop at local Ultrasonic Studios, inviting in such local musicians as Pete Fountain, Al Hirt, and the Neville Brothers and addressing the music and styles of such local legends as Jelly Roll Morton, Huey "Piano" Smith, Fats Domino, James Booker, and Professor Longhair. The geography may have been circumscribed, but the stylistic range was extensive, from jazz and blues to folk and rock. And it was all played with festive conviction - Dr. John is the perfect archivist for the music, being one of its primary proponents, yet he had never addressed it quite as directly as he did here.

Dr. John's Gumbo bridged the gap between post-hippie rock and early rock & roll, blues, and R&B, offering a selection of classic New Orleans R&B, including "Tipitina" and "Junko Partner," updated with a gritty, funky beat. There aren't as many psychedelic flourishes as there were on his first two albums, but the ones that are present enhance his sweeping vision of American roots music. And that sly fusion of styles makes Dr. John's Gumbo one of Dr. John's finest albums.

Tim Maia's comeback album after amazing experiments of Racional, the only flaw of this set of 11 focused songs is that some of them fade out much sooner than we would like! The song Rodésia here was a hit, and the English-language "Nobody Can Live For Ever" also provided the title for the Luaka Bop compilation of Tim's material.

Original Album Series contains Curtis Mayfield's first five solo albums: Curtis (1970), Curtis Live! (1971), Roots (1971), Back to the World (1973), and Sweet Exorcist (1974). As with other Original Album Series packages, each disc is in a paper, LP replica-style sleeve with reproductions of the front and back sides. With the release of Original Album Series by Curtis Mayfield you get 5 Cds by the man himself It really is wonderful bargain.Unlike other sets these have not been re mastered and DO NOT include any extra tracks which is a shame. But then Curtis Mayfield produced each and every one of the five so I suspect that there was no need for them to be remastered as the sound was good to begin with.

Song of Innocence is the debut album of American composer and producer David Axelrod. It was released in October 1968 by Capitol Records. Axelrod sought to capitalize on the experimental climate of popular music at the time and composed the album as a suite-like tone poem based on Songs of Innocence, a 1789 illustrated collection of poems by William Blake. It was recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles with an orchestra and a variety of studio musicians, including keyboardist and conductor Don Randi, guitarist Al Casey, bassist Carol Kaye, and drummer Earl Palmer. Song of Innocence is an instrumental jazz fusion record that incorporates elements of classical, rock, funk, pop, and theatre music. It is arranged for bass, drums, and string instruments, written in the rock idiom with tempos centered on rock-based patterns by Palmer. Axelrod used contrast in his orchestral compositions and interspersed the album's euphoric psychedelic R&B form with dramatic, harrowing arrangements to reflect the supernatural themes found in Blake's poems. The music's reverent, psychedelic overtones evoke their themes of innocence and spirituality.

Two scores with a tone of righteous fury woven throughout. While there are differences in the approach to the two scores, Quincy Jones did manage to provide a unifying style – no mean feat, considering that the intent behind In the Heat of the Night was to get a Southern, blues-inflected atmosphere to support the angry, anti-racist approach of the picture, while They Call Me Misters Tibbs! had a more open, urban attitude from its San Francisco setting. The music throughout has an edge (the lighter music in the second score is generally source music), with some interesting musical experiments going on (Jones, as one example, used cimbalom to reflect Tibbs' feelings in They Call Me Mister Tibbs!.) The Ryko CD release includes an Enhanced CD portion with film material. The sound throughout the disc is excellent, although the cues from In the Heat of the Night show their age, and the dialogue excerpts sound very rough.

An early-'80s studio outfit assembled by producer Ray Rock and featuring the vocals of Crown Heights Affair member Ray "Johnny" Reid, Rocket's self-titled, seven-song set is most notable for the serene, summery strains of "Here Comes My Love," a mid-tempo club jaunt replete with a catchy, softly sung melody and a sublimely funky, zesty rhythm section (note that the remixed 12" version included here outshines the original version also included).

"Fantasy" from Heaven and Earth was one of their most enduring records and the one that has the monster groover "I Feel A Groove Under My Feet" (part 1 & part 2), which has a choppy club sound that feels a lot like the riff that was used in "Rapture". Other cuts have more of a mellow group soul feel, and titles include "Let's Get It Together", "I'm In Love With Your Lady", and "Whole Lot Of Love". Recorded in Chicago, with arrangements by Floyd Morris. Heaven & Earth Fantasy is a must have for vintage R&B lovers.

Still Loving You and Pains Of Love, the two self-released albums under Bay Area musician Lawrence Ross's Twilight moniker in 1981 and ’86 respectively have enjoyed near mythical “Grail” status among fanatic crate diggers. Considered stone soul/funk classics; copies have treaded for huge sums. Ross recorded and pressed his records on his own Galaxy Productions, and due to lack of funds or distribution let them disappear when pressings sold out. In 2010, Ubiquity’s Luv N’ Haight licensed them for re-release on CD and limited edition vinyl, thus allowing them to evaluated strictly on their musical merits.

Legendary Detroit arranger, producer and guitarist Dennis Coffey released ‘Evolution’ in 1971 and sampled-heads will know the importance of the breakbeat funk of ‘Scorpio’ – much sampled in the hip-hop world, but also check the driving groove of ‘Getting It On’. The heavily percussive ‘Son Of Scorpio’ develops the theme while the funker ‘Theme From Enter The Dragon’ is classic 70s soundtrack action. The clavinet laced ‘Can You Feel It’ is also another highlight on a set that includes 11 bonus cuts mainly lifted from the ‘Electric Coffey’ LP as well as the ten that made up the original album.

John 5 released his ninth solo album entitled "Invasion" on July 31, 2019. He was on the road in early and late 2019 in support of the "Invasion" album. “It’s just music I love. I have some Bluegrass, some crazy Rock stuff, but even some EDM style music in there like if there was a DJ, but the DJ was making all the sounds by themselves with a guitar. That is kind of how I took that approach with “Crank It” and “I Am John 5.” I started getting into that, playing those songs live, and people really love it. So why not? I play what I love, it’s from the heart, and people really seem to enjoy it..” John William Lowery, best known by the stage name John 5, is an American guitarist. His stage name was bestowed on him in 1998 when he left David Lee Roth and joined the rock group Marilyn Manson as their guitarist, taking over for Zim Zum. Still going by the name "John 5", Lowery has since become the guitarist for Rob Zombie.
