Zulu Guitar's Pioneering Tricksters But for this compilation of rescued songs masterfully restored from rare 78 rpm shellacs, few could imagine the diversely beautiful roots of Zulu Guitar Music emerging during the period 1950 – 1965. Story-tellers and master musicians appropriate outlaw personae, re-purpose country and western, Hawaiian and other styles, to stretch and challenge our notion of “the Zulu guitar”. Twenty-five songs (18 on vinyl) plunge us into the depths of the migrant experience. Translations in the liner notes offer us glimpses of pugnacity, melancholy and heartache, all coloured by the paternalism that circumscribed the singers’ apartheid-dominated lives.

Kora, guitar and tabla come together in unity when Mamadou Diabate, Jeff Lang and Bobby Singh play to an astonishingly beautiful and surprisingly natural recording that displays the conversational and virtuosic style that all three are renowned for. Highly recommended.

In 1972 black people rarely featured in the country’s white-owned official newspapers, unless, perhaps, they were a dead “terrorist”. However, Dr Footswitch’s performance prompted The Rhodesia Herald to print the picture of their guitar player, Manu Kambani, on the front page along with the screaming sentence “Jimi Hendrix is dead but Manu is alive”. With his ability to mimic the mesmerising antics of Jimi Hendrix Manu had impressed everybody and the editor of the paper couldn’t resist printing the story. Heavy criticism from conservative whites followed, accusing the Herald of “lowering the standards.” But the coverage turned Manu into an emblematic figure in Harare, one of Salisbury’s oldest townships, and would influence many youngsters to form their own musical groups. Those bands began fusing Rock music, Congolese Rumba, South African Mbaqanga, soul and traditional beats into an underground music movement that would shape the future of Zimbabwean sound and challenge the colonial establishment.

Far and away the most comprehensive compilation of African music ever achieved, Africa - 50 Years of Music collects 185 classic recordings by 183 important artists from 39 countries in North, South, East and West Africa. The artists include universal stars such as Miriam Makeba, Fela Kuti, Youssou N'Dour, Franco, Cheb Khaled, Cesaria Evora, Mulatu Astatke, Salif Keita, Manu Dibango and Oum Kalsoum. The tracks, licensed from some of the world's most respected record companies, are all original studio recordings or, in a few cases, famous concert performances. Most of them were made in the 50 years from 1960 to 2010 - the era of African independence - but several date from the 1940s and '50s. Many of these songs are known and loved worldwide: Pata Pata, Soul Makossa, Yeke Yeke, Mario, Shakara, Jive Soweto. Others will be revelations to even the most dedicated record collectors.

Having featured on three of Soundway’s most popular titles, across the definitive Nigeria Special compilation series, we felt The Funkees output deserved closer inspection. Presented here (on CD, download & double gatefold LP) are 18 slices of funky Afro-rock grooves hand picked by Soundway’s Miles Cleret from a selection of the bands 45s and two long players. In the early 1970s The Funkees were the number-one east Nigerian band and the only outfit to seriously challenge the popular Lagos based rock combos MonoMono and BLO. Stoking the dancefloor was the young band’s first priority and The Funkees were often playing through the night, seven days a week.

A fascinating account of the mystic Afro-Haitian rituals inherited from the days of slavery. With these songs, drums and trances of possessed initiates, vodou deities were called upon in authentic ceremonies considered by French colonists as the work of the Devil. This complex religion inspired fi ctional zombies and magic, united slaves and spurred the fi ght for Haiti’s independence as the fi rst black republic in history. Thousands of Haitian slaves deported to Louisiana and Cuba spread this voodoo legacy throughout North America, where it became one of the deep roots of jazz (and then rock and funk) and Afro-Cuban musics. In this companion- set to “Jamaica Folk-Trance-Possession”, Bruno Blum invokes Papa Legba, the spirit of communication, and deciphers some rare sound-documents, the best of the recordings devoted to voodoo: the supreme key to Afro-American music forms. Born out of the ashes of post-punk, there were plenty of experimental singles during the early part of this period: Siouxsie’s ‘Swimming Horses’, Shriekback’s ‘Lined Up’, Soft Cell’s ‘Heat’, Echo & The Bunnymen’s ‘Gods Will Be Gods’, and the Smiths’ ‘Girl Afraid’ – a perfect kitchen sink scenario. Pete Shelley and Scritti Politti went the electronic route to great effect, while the Special AKA delivered the perfect riposte to ‘Hard Times’ (all those ripped jeans) and having fun on the dole with the under-appreciated ‘Bright Lights’.

Like his legendary father, Ali Farka Touré, Vieux is a guitarist who likes to collaborate. He has worked with the Israeli keyboard player Idan Raichel, and now comes an even more powerful partnership, with American singer Julia Easterlin. The opening Little Things starts with the familiar guitar lines of that Malian favourite Kaira, before Easterlin eases in to nudge the song towards western balladry. Elsewhere, this bravely original fusion switches from an African funk treatment of Fever Ray’s I’m Not Done to slow, thoughtful laments. The traditional In the Pines has been covered by everyone from Lead Belly to Nirvana, but is here reworked with chilling, whispered vocals and desert blues guitar, while the most startling track is a slow, African-edged treatment of Dylan’s Masters of War, which sounds like a pained meditation on the recent chaos in Mali.

The debut album by Malcolm McLaren - former manager of the Sex Pistols and the New York Dolls, and infamous producer in his own right - was known as Duck Rock. First released in 1983, it showed off as far-flung a mix of genres as hip hop, international music, rockabilly, and disco, not least due in part to its hand in the production duties by Fairlight pioneer JJ Jeczalik, Trevor Horn and Anne Dudley, all of whom would form Art of Noise, as well as further guest appearances by Africa Bambaataa and Thomas Dolby. An electrifying medley of the sample-tastic sensibility of the day, the album also plays out as a form of satire, parodying the oft-chaotic flights of fancy indulged by the very same era.

Somewhere in Afrika, an ode to Mann's home country of South Africa, contains a formula that is atypical of Manfred Mann's Earth Band sound. With rhythms that combine an African flavor with a modern rock feel, vocalist Mick Rogers takes over on vocals with the number 22 hit "Runner," released as the album's only single. Tracks such as "Demolition Man" and "Eyes of Nostradamus" are model Earth Band efforts, but the compelling material lies in songs such as "Lalela," "Koze Kobenini," and the title track, which conveys Mann's love for his birthplace without sounding overly pretentious or manufactured. The instrumentation is solid and free-flowing, with drums and other percussion work coming to the forefront while maintaining the group's atmosphere as a rock band.
