Private Wax here means labels that only put out one or two songs, or maybe a few more. So most of these have not been heard by human ears. While a great lineup of picks, I think this one was not quite as enjoyable as Deep Disco and Boogie (ohh, appears to be OOP, as of last week), Deep Disco Culture Vol. 2 (I am still seeking out Vol. 1 or for it back it print, hey, Zaf!), but all in all, if you want decently musical quality disco you have never heard, this is one for you.

Like many disco groups of the 70s, Saint Tropez was a producers' brainchild, in this case of American producers Laurin Rinder & W. Michael Lewis who had already been successful with disco groups El Coco and Le Pamplemousse. Saint Tropez was a female group made up of three session singers. The first two albums Je T'aime (1977) and Belle de Jour (1978), both hugely successful disco albums with big symphonic orchestrations and a tight disco backing, all the instruments played solely by the two producers. Je T'aime offered Serge Gainsbourg's well-known classic in an equally sensual disco symphony. They also covered material by Van McCoy and Gregg Diamond's "Heart To Heart" (sung in French as "Coeur à coeur"), originally written for The Andrea True Connection. Belle de Jour followed the same formula, yielding two successful 12"s "One More Minute" and "Fill My Life With Love", and also covering Gloria Gaynor's "Most Of All". Typical for this kind of studio projects, lots of different singers were involved in the earlier '77 and '78 projects.

A stylish selection of city pop, funk and modern soul from Japanese label Nippon Columbia, selected by DJ Notoya and featuring cult classics and rarities by Hiroshi Sato, Hatsumi Shibata, Hitomi 'Penny' Tohyama & many more. Annotated by Notoya with journalist Nick Luscombe and artwork by Optigram. Newly remastered audio.
The selection on 'Tokyo Glow' starts with 'Kimugare' a relaxed mid tempo track by Kumi Nakamura, actually a famous actress who only recorded one album in 1980 for Columbia. The set continues and flows effortlessly with the sunshine grooves of Miyuki Maki, Hatsumi Shibata and cult keyboard player Hiroshi Sato before the pace starts going faster and funkier with New Generation Company, Kengo Kurozumi - with his superb boogie, 'Juggler' - and one of the queens of the genre, Hitomi 'Penny' Tohyama with 'Tuxedo Connection'. Another fine example on the set is the mid-tempo groove of "I Wander All Alone Part III" by New Generation Company, an aggregate group of some of the best Japanese session musicians led by arranger Katz Hoshi and including Hiroyuki Namba (key), Kazuo Shiina (gtr) and Yutaka Uehara (ds) who all played with Tatsuro Yamashita among many others.

The most popular exponent of the classic New Orleans R&B sound, Fats Domino sold more records than any other black rock & roll star of the 1950s. His relaxed, lolling boogie-woogie piano style and easygoing, warm vocals anchored a long series of national hits from the mid-'50s to the early '60s. Through it all, his basic approach rarely changed. He may not have been one of early rock's most charismatic, innovative, or threatening figures, but he was certainly one of its most consistent. Domino's first single, "The Fat Man" (1949), is one of the dozens of tracks that have been consistently singled out as a candidate for the first rock & roll record.

The follow up the successful 'Gary Crowley's lost 80s' Released in 2019. "I count myself incredibly lucky when I think back to my 1980's. A lot of those bands and artists that resonated with me during that time are featured on this, our sequel to our first lost 80s collection, which we have inspiringly titled "GC lost 80s two"! I must be honest and say as soon as I delivered the track listing for the first compilation, I already had a selection in mind for a sequel (if ever I was asked by those cool folks at Demon). Thankfully, they asked…And this is it." Gary Crowley. 65 tracks compiled and themed by Gary Crowley disc by disc. Many of these tracks are rare and hard to find having not appeared on CD before. Many of the latter came nowhere near the mainstream but most certainly (imho) Deserve another chance to shine under the spotlight. It was such a diverse and eclectic time for music, hopefully this box set mirrors that." Gary Crowley.
