This compilation offers a first overview of the early works of electronic and tape music created by Peruvians between 1964 and 1984. This period marks a technical and aesthetic evolution that allows us to understand the development of electronic music in the Peruvian context, from an initially internationalist model to a more situaded one. The first phase occurs in the 1960s, when many composers migrated outside Peru in search of advanced training and access to knowledge and infrastructure that the academic music scene in Peru could not provide. During these specialization trips, Peruvian composers gained access to the languages of the international avant-garde of the post-war period. César Bolaños traveled to Argentina, to the Centro Latinoamericano de Altos Estudios Musicales (CLAEM) at the Instituto Di Tella, where he produced an extensive body of work, including "Intensidad y Altura" (1964) for magnetic tape, the first electronic work produced in the CLAEM electronic music laboratory. Similarly, Edgar Valcárcel was a CLAEM fellow and also spent time at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center in New York, where he composed, among other works, "Invención" (1967) for magnetic tape. Enrique Pinilla also passed through there, composing "Prisma" (1967) for magnetic tape. Alejandro Núñez Allauca was another CLAEM fellow, where he composed "Gravitación Humana" (1970) for magnetic tape.

In Jade Warrior's second album for Island Records, atmosphere takes center stage over melody, and jam sessions supplant structure. The record consists of a single composition. Parts one and two were needed because it was released in pre-CD days and the song took up both sides of the LP, identifying the entire album under a single title - an unwise strategy. "Waves" has no recurring theme; it opens with a Brian Eno-influenced ambient passage and meanders from there. Listeners find it difficult to identify the strongest passages, but the artists undoubtedly intended that the album be heard in its entirety rather than in small chunks. This might have seemed noble at the time, but it resulted in a nightmare for radio programmers who might have provided Waves with the airplay it desperately needed to push Jade Warrior beyond cult status…

The second box set of Depeche Mode singles, reissued on CD for the first time, picks up with "Get the Balance Right," the band's third single following the departure of original songwriter Vince Clarke and the considerably edgier Martin L. Gore's elevation to the fore. Necessarily, his earliest efforts (included on the first box) echoed the pure poppiness of Clarke's work; here, the emphasis is on the period of transition that dragged Depeche Mode from an apparently transient teenybop sensation to the darker, harsher, and above all adventurous electro pioneers whose longevity is now a matter of history. Via "Everything Counts," "Love in Itself," "People Are People," "Master and Servant," and "Blasphemous Rumours," by the time you reach the end of the box, Depeche Mode is unrecognizable from the combo who opened it…

In 1979, Ola Håkansson, a former vocalist of Ola & the Janglers and then a publishing manager at Sonet Records, teamed up with Tim Norell and Ulf Wahlberg to write a few songs that they submitted to the Melodifestivalen, a popular Swedish song contest. They did not win but decided to continue working together and changed their band's name from Ola+3 to Secret Service. Besides Ola Håkansson (vocals), Tim Norell and Ulf Wahlberg (keyboards), the original lineup included Tony Lindberg (guitars), Leif Paulsen (bass) and Leif Johansson (drums).

A bit tighter and more conventional soul than earlier work by Starpoint, but still pretty darn great too - and great proof that the group were more on top of their bag than other funky combos of the type. Renee Diggs is strongly out front on vocals throughout - lending her sweet sound to the flurry of electro keys and beats that make up most of the instrumentation here. The instrumentation's almost got some echoes of the Minneapolis funky soul scene at the times, but echoes the group's older sound at other points - and although a few tracks are quite hook heavy, they're never too poppish or cloying. Titles include "Behind Your Back", "Don't Be So Serious", "Put Your Love On Me", "It's So Delicious", "Let Go", and "I Got The Love".

Norwegian duo Röyksopp compensated for the cold climes of their native Tromsø by making some of the warmest, most inviting downbeat electronica of the 21st century, exemplified by early tracks like "Eple" and "Poor Leno." The pair, Torbjørn Brundtland and Svein Berge, both grew up in Tromsø and began recording in the early '90s…

During the mid-'70s, Germany's Kraftwerk established the sonic blueprint followed by an extraordinary number of artists in the decades to come. From the British new romantic movement to hip-hop to techno, the group's self-described "robot pop" – hypnotically minimal, obliquely rhythmic music performed solely via electronic means – resonates in virtually every new development to impact the contemporary pop scene of the late- 20th century, and as pioneers of the electronic music form, their enduring influence cannot be overstated…

Not long into the ceaseless promotional parade for Born This Way, Lady Gaga’s second full-length record and easily the most anticipated record of the 2010s, a certain sense of inevitability crept into play. It was inevitable that Born This Way would be an escalation of The Fame, it was inevitable that Gaga would go where others feared to tread, it was inevitable that it would be bigger than any other record thrown down in 2011, both in its scale and success…

Well known for her creative compositional style and distinct singing, Björk's recording career began in 1977 at the age of 11, when she released (as Björk Guðmundsdóttir) her first album, while studying piano and flute at music school. Although the album became platinum, she refused to make another disco-folk follow-up and, at the age of 13, formed her first short-lived punk band, all-girl alliance Spit and Snot (Saliva and Phlegm), where she played the drums. Later on she was involved in projects such as Exodus and Jam 80, all of which without known record releases…
