Magenta, Yellow & Turquoise. On August 1, 1987, Tangerine Dream gave a memorable concert on the Platz der Republik, right in front of the Reichstag in Berlin, as part of the city's 750th anniversary celebrations. With over 100, 000 spectators, the concert took place near the Berlin Wall, symbolizing the division of Germany. The group's electronic music, accompanied by spectacular visuals and fireworks, created a unique experience. Rumor has it that people in East Germany could even hear the event.

Analogue Productions (Atlantic 75 Series). Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Atlantic Records! Foreigner's No. 1-selling fourth studio album! Featuring "Urgent," "Waiting for Girl Like You," and "Juke Box Hero" Hybrid Stereo SACD. Throughout the course of three late-70s albums, Foreigner (along with Journey and Styx) was recognized as one of the top AOR bands of the era. But the band was still looking for that grand slam of a record that would push them to the very top of the heap.

As the founding father of Finnish music, Jean Sibelius is the measure of all things to such an extent that an outside observer may easily miss the abundance of talented masters who also practiced the art of composition quite successfully in the land of a thousand lakes. One of them was Erkki Melartin. Not ten years younger than the composer of Finlandia, he also left us a significant oeuvre that repeatedly begs a comparison to his older colleague – of course, it is a comparison whose results are subject to debate. To be fair, we can discover a phrase here or there that reminds us of Sibelius; occasionally, some of Mahler's vocabulary may have sneaked in as well; but the persona whose legacy is six mighty symphonies has blazed his own independent trail away from the Romantic tradition, leading us relentlessly to an unheard cosmos.

We're not sure what "equidity" means – but the grooves here are so great, we're hardly going to ask for a definition! The package is filled with plenty of the funk promised in the title – but often in ways that are really odd and offbeat – just what you'd expect from a mighty trip through the legendary P&P Records archives! Notes are a bit spare, but most tracks here appear to be from the late 70s and early 80s – mixing earlier funk modes with bits of club and old school hip hop – the latter of which makes for some of the best numbers here, cuts that really step out with a street party sort of feel. Titles include "Robot Dance" by Marvin Wright, "New York Computer Break Dance" by Stax, "Game Of Life (inst" by Lavara & E Mallison, "Gangster Rock" by Little Starsky, "Anyway I Can" by Milton Floyd, "Pound For Pound" by Le'O Roy, "Robot Dance" by Milton Wright, "Disco Hop" by Fly Guy, "Equidity Funk" by Mistafide, "Funk Rap (inst)" by Ikim & Bacardi, "This Is The Way To Break Dance" by Super Coper & Clarence Breaker, and "Let's Do It" by Jesse Gee. © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

The fruit of a unique collaboration between a brilliant musical polymath and one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles specializing primarily in medieval and Renaissance polyphony—the composer Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol and Blue Heron—Lessons from Nightingales presents the world premiere recordings of two new pieces inspired by the two principal Turkish traditions of Sufi mysticism. The Triumph (composed in 2024 for Blue Heron’s 25th birthday) sets a poem by the Bektaşi Sufi dervish Edip Harabi (1853-1917) in a dazzling sound world created by an ensemble of voices, bowed tanbur (long-necked lute), ney (end-blown flute), and an array of percussion, weaving together elements of Turkish songs, modes, and rhythmic cycles; Renaissance counterpoint; and the Japanese court music called Gagaku.

Saint-Saens’s Etudes offer an intricate and scintillating panoply of the French school of technique (the basis and prophecy of what Jean-Philippe Collard so mischievously called Marguerite Long’s ‘diggy-diggy-dee’ school of piano playing). Yet as Piers Lane tells us in his alternately wry and delightful accompanying essay (obligatory reading for all lovers of French pianism), they can be as evocative (‘Les cloches de las Palmas’) as they are finger-twisting (‘En forme de valse’, to name but one). The left-hand Etudes, too, given their self-imposed limitation, are a fragile and poetic surprise. In other words Saint-Saens’s Etudes are more comprehensive than their equivalents by, say, Moszkowski or Lazare Levey (superbly recorded by Ilana Vered on Connoisseur Society and Danielle Laval on French EMI, respectively – neither issued in the UK).
